A sudden, devastating Rasuwa (Bhotekoshi) flash flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, sending a huge surge of water through the Bhotekoshi River and causing widespread destruction around Syabrubesi, Timure and Rasuwagadhi. The Rasuwa flood entered Nepal from the Tibetan side of the border and rapidly moved downstream through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.
The disaster has damaged one of Nepal’s most important Himalaya corridors, affecting settlements, roads, bridges, security posts, hydropower infrastructure and the Rasuwagadhi customs area. Search and rescue operations are underway, while authorities have warned communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers to move to safer areas.
Because the situation is still developing, casualty figures and the full extent of infrastructure damage may change as rescue teams reach isolated locations.
What Happened in Rasuwa on August 26, 2026?
An unexpected flash flood hit the Bhotekoshi River originating from the Tibetan region of the border on August 26, 2026, causing widespread damage across Timure, Rasuwagadhi, Syabrubesi, Shantibazar, Betrawati, Trishuli and downstream areas.
The Flood Forecasting Division was informed of the sudden rise at around 9:00 AM, while local reports from Timure said residents heard a powerful rumbling sound and saw the flood arrive at approximately 8:50 AM.
The flood also severely affected major electricity infrastructure, including the Rasuwagadhi, Chilime, Doosan Enerbility Site and Trishuli hydropower projects, as well as the Trishuli 3B Hub 220 kV substation and other hydropower facilities. Electricity supply was disrupted in parts of the affected region.
The department has begun an investigation, and a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) is one of the possible causes, although the exact source has not yet been officially confirmed.
Floodwaters continued downstream through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems toward Nuwakot, Dhading, and Chitwan. Authorities have warned communities along the river corridor as far downstream as Muglin to remain on high alert.
According to the preliminary report, the flood is believed to have swept away a major settlement, offices along the riverbanks, and stranded /trapped people who were traveling in vehicles, working in offices, It is estimated that hundreds of people, including government office employees, office staff, police, and army, may have been swept away.

Did Heavy rainfall cause the Rasuwa flood?
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), heavy rainfall did not trigger the flood. Senior meteorologist Min Kumar Aryal said that rainfall in parts of Rasuwa over the previous 24 hours was light, with rainfall not exceeding approximately 7 mm. At the same time, satellite observations showed significant rainfall on the Tibetan side of the border.
This has strengthened the focus on a possible upstream event in Tibet. However, scientists are still investigating whether the rainfall contributed to a landslide, ice avalanche, glacier lake blast, river blockage, or another process that ultimately produced the flood.
What Areas Were Affected?
The August 26, 2026 Bhotekoshi flash flood has affected a much wider area than a single settlement in Rasuwa. The worst destruction has been reported along the Bhotekoshi River corridor from the Nepal-Tibet border through Rasuwagadi, Timure and Syabrubesi, while the flood then travelled downstream through Mailung, Betrawati, Trishuli and other riverside settlements in Nuwakot and Dhading. Damage and flood warnings have also extended into parts of Dhading and Chitwan.

Rasuwagadhi
The Rasuwagadhi border area suffered major damage as the flood moved through the northern Bhotekoshi corridor. The police post, and customs infrastructure were affected, while vehicles, goods, and other property in the border area were swept away or damaged. Rasuwagadhi is Nepal’s major overland gateway toward Kerung and Tibet, making the damage significant not only for Rasuwa but also for Nepal-China trade and tourism.
Timure
Timure is one of the most severely affected areas in northern Rasuwa. The Rasuwa flash flood reportedly settled around 8:30-9:00 a.m., leaving residents with very little time to react.
More than 100 houses were reported to have been in the settlement, and many residents were forced to move to higher ground while waiting for rescue. The flood also damaged security facilities, and nine Armed Police Force personnel stationed at the Timure border outpost were initially reported missing.
Syabrubesi
Syabrubesi is another of the hardest-hit areas. The town is the main gateway to the Langtang region trekking and an important settlement along the road toward the China border.
Floodwaters damaged market areas, buildings, and public infrastructure, including the police post. The destruction around Syabrubesi is particularly important for tourism because it is the principal road access point for trekkers heading toward Langtang Valley, Gosaikunda and the Tamang Heritage Trail.
Mailung
Mailung is another important affected settlement along the Bhotekoshi corridor. Reports have identified Mailung among the riverside areas hit by the sudden flood, and the police facility there was also reported to have been damaged.
The area is particularly important because the road between Betrawati, Syabrubesi and Rasuwagadhi follows the river corridor and has suffered extensive damage.
Betrawati
Betrawati Bazaar in Nuwakot has suffered some of the most serious downstream damage. After passing through Rasuwa, the flood travelled south through the river system and reached Nuwakot. Local officials said Betrawati was among the worst-affected market areas, with floodwater entering riverside sections and damaging buildings and other physical infrastructure.
The damage here is especially significant because Betrawati is the southern starting point of the approximately 42-kilometre road connecting to Rasuwagadhi. The Department of Roads reported that the entire Betrawati-Rasuwagadhi stretch had been damaged at multiple points, with several concrete bridges washed away.
Trishuli Bazaar
Trishuli Bazaar was also affected as the flood moved downstream into Nuwakot. Floodwater entered riverside areas and damaged property and infrastructure. The Central Jail in Trishuli was also reported inundated.
Trishuli is an important transport and commercial centre, so flooding in the area has disrupted movement and increased concern for communities located along the river.
Dhunge Bazaar
Dhunge Bazaar in Bidur Municipality was another affected area in Nuwakot. Floodwater reached the riverside market area and caused physical damage. The settlement is part of the downstream corridor affected after the Bhotekoshi flash flood moved from Rasuwa into the Trishuli River system.
Dhading: Galchhi, Baireni and Malekhu Areas
The flood’s impact extended beyond Nuwakot into Dhading, particularly around the Trishuli River corridor.
A suspension bridge in Galchhi was washed away, while authorities identified riverside settlements around Baireni, Malekhu and Galchhi as highly affected areas. Vehicles travelling along the Prithvi Highway were held at safer locations as officials monitored the flood situation.
The flood has washed away several concrete bridges, damaged suspension bridges, and roads along the riverbanks, disrupting connectivity between different areas. This is likely to cause problems until alternative arrangements are put in place.
Kailash Kerung Route Affected by the Rasuwa Flood
The August 26 Rasuwa flood has seriously disrupted the Kailash Mansarovar Kerung route. The route normally enters Tibet through the Rasuwagadhi Kerung border crossing, making the flood-affected Bhotekoshi corridor a critical access route for pilgrims travelling from Nepal toward Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.
The sudden flood swept through the Rasuwagadhi and Timure border areas, damaging roads, bridges, the immigration office, customs infrastructure, the police office, and local houses and other facilities along the Nepal-China border. The Department of Roads reported that the entire 42-kilometre lower part road from Betrawati to Rasuwagadhi has been damaged at multiple points, with several concrete bridges washed away. The department also said the additional 16-kilometre section from Syabrubesi toward the China border was damaged.
Will Kailash Mansarovar Travel Through Kerung Resume?
Based on our experience and our assessment of the current damage, the route to Kailash via Rasuwagadi, Kerung, does not appear to be feasible for travel in 2026 at present. If reconstruction is delayed, the disruption is likely to continue and could affect travel plans until March 2027.
The scale of damage to the road, bridges and border infrastructure means that authorities first need to assess the affected sections and begin reconstruction and clearance work. The Department of Roads has already confirmed extensive damage along the Betrawati Rasuwagadhi corridor.
Therefore, pilgrims should rely on new official announcements and their authorised travel operators rather than assuming that the Kerung route will reopen on its previously planned schedule.
For now, the most accurate description is that the Kailash Mansarovar Kerung route has been severely disrupted by the Rasuwa flood, with access to the Rasuwagadhi border damaged and the situation still developing.

Affected Trekking Routes
1. Langtang Valley Trek
Syabrubesi, the principal roadhead for Langtang, is one of the areas severely affected by the flood. The road from Kathmandu toward Syabrubesi has been disrupted, and authorities have reported major damage around Syabrubesi. Therefore, Langtang trekking access is currently disrupted. However, I would not claim that the entire Langtang trekking trail has been destroyed until a trail assessment is released.
Although the road to Syabrubesi, the main starting point for the Langtang trek, is currently closed, the alternative route to Langtang via Gosaikunda is completely safe, and this flood has caused no obstruction along the route.
2. Tamang Heritage Trail
The Tamang Heritage Trail is also affected because it operates in the Rasuwa/Langtang region and uses the Syabrubesi-area access network. Syabrubesi is an important point for this trekking region, so the flood has created serious access and logistical problems, although the Tamang Heritage Trail through Gosaikunda is completely safe, without any obstruction.
How Many People Are Missing After the Rasuwa Flood?
Hundreds of tourists traveling to Kailash via Rasuwagadhi, tourists returning after completing their Kailash journey, and tourists heading out for the Gosaikunda trek are believed to have been among the worst affected.
Among them were a large number of Indian nationals, as well as tourists from the USA, Australia, the UK, Canada, and other countries. According to the Nepal Tourism Board, an estimated 484 travelers, including 391 foreign nationals from 27 countries, were affected.
This makes the Rasuwa disaster particularly significant for the pilgrimage sector because Rasuwagadhi is one of the main overland gateways from Nepal into Tibet.
Is This the Same Area Affected by the 2025 Rasuwa Flood?
The latest Rasuwa Flood is in the same broader Rasuwa Tibet border region that experienced a devastating flood in 2025. The July 2025 disaster severely damaged the Rasuwagadhi border area, including the Nepal-China Friendship Bridge and sections of the road toward Syabrubesi.
In 2025, investigations linked the flood to a sudden release of water associated with a glacial lake in Tibet. For the 2026 event, officials had not yet confirmed the exact source, although a glacial or other sudden upstream water-release event was among the possibilities being investigated.
However, the 2026 event should be treated as a separate disaster, and its exact cause remains under investigation.
Final Update: What Travellers Should Know
For travellers, the biggest immediate impact is on the Rasuwagadhi Kerung toward Tibet and Kailash Mansarovar, Langtang Valley Trek, and Tamang Heritage Trail. The main concern now is not necessarily that every trekking trail has been destroyed. Still, access roads, bridges, and local infrastructure in the affected corridor have suffered major damage.
If you are planning to travel to Langtang, Gosaikunda, Tamang Heritage, Kerung or Kailash Mansarovar, check the latest road, trail and border conditions before departure and follow instructions from local authorities and experienced trekking or travel operators.
Avoid travelling into affected areas simply because floodwaters have receded, as damaged bridges, unstable slopes and landslides can continue to create serious risks.
The situation remains developing, and casualty figures, damage estimates, road conditions and trekking-route information may change as rescue teams reach more remote areas.
Important Safety Note
If you are currently in or near Rasuwa, Syabrubesi, Timure, Rasuwagadhi, Betrawati or other riverside areas downstream, stay away from riverbanks and vulnerable bridges, follow local evacuation instructions, and avoid unnecessary travel through damaged areas.
For trekkers and tourists, safety should come before travel schedules. Wait for reliable confirmation that your particular road, trail, or border crossing is safe and operational before beginning your journey.

Similarly, the Kerung route for the Kailash pilgrimage appears likely to remain closed for some time. However, alternative routes via Tatopani and Hilsa will remain fully operational.
11. What alternatives are available if the Kerung route remains closed?
Depending on official border arrangements and current operating conditions, pilgrims may need to consider alternative access arrangements such as the Simikot-Hilsa route and helicopter connections. Present these only after authorities and operators confirm access.
12. What should tourists do if they are planning to visit Rasuwa now?
Tourists should postpone travel into severely affected areas until authorities confirm safe access, avoid riverbanks, monitor official notices, and confirm road and trekking-trail conditions before travelling.
13. Where can I get the latest Rasuwa flood travel update?
For travelers and pilgrims, the safest approach is to follow updates from Nepal government authorities, local administration, border authorities, and your trekking or Kailash operator before travelling. Conditions can change rapidly during an active disaster.
14. So, does that mean all routes to Kailash are closed?
The clear answer is no, but for 2026, and potentially even into 2027 if the delay in the reconstruction of Kailash via Rasuwagadi Kerung continues, we see three possible alternatives for traveling to Kailash: one via Hilsa, another via Tatopani, and the third via Lhasa. These are the three options we currently see, and Bold Himalaya will use them for future departures.
