Larkya La Pass Crossing Guide: Difficulty, Altitude & Safety Tips

A stunning view of the Himalayan mountains and surrounding landscape on the Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Larkya La Pass crossing is the highest, longest and one of the hardest parts of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. At 5,106 meters (16,752 feet), the pass takes trekkers from Dharamsala, also known as Larkya Phedi, over the high point of the route before the long descent towards Bimthang. The complete crossing commonly takes around 8 to 10 hours, depending on your pace, weather and trail conditions.

Larkya La is not a technical mountain climb. The real challenge comes from spending a long day at high altitude, where the air is thinner, the terrain is uneven and snow or ice can make walking slower. By the time you reach the pass, you have already spent several days trekking at increasing elevations, so endurance and acclimatization are just as important as physical strength.

For many trekkers, reaching the top of Larkya La is one of the biggest achievements of the entire Manaslu Circuit. The prayer flags, high mountain scenery and the feeling of standing at 5,106 meters make the effort feel worthwhile.

Overview

  • Reach Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters, the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
  • Leave Dharamsala before sunrise and climb through an open high-altitude landscape with little vegetation.
  • Walk past rocky slopes, snow-covered sections and broad mountain views as the trail approaches the pass.
  • See peaks such as Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru and Annapurna II when visibility is clear.
  • Stop at the pass marked with prayer flags and take in the surrounding Himalayan landscape.
  • Continue with the long descent towards Bimthang, where the environment gradually changes as you lose elevation.
  • Use two trekking poles and sturdy boots for better balance on rocky, snowy or slippery sections.
  • In snowy conditions, gaiters and suitable traction such as microspikes or crampons may be useful.
  • Follow your guide’s advice about timing, weather and trail conditions, especially near the pass.
  • Reach one of the major milestones of the Manaslu Circuit and experience the satisfaction of completing its highest crossing.

What Is Larkya La Pass?

Larkya La is a high mountain pass in the Manaslu region of Nepal and the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The elevation of Larkya La Pass is 5,106 meters, making it the highest point on the entire route. It lies between Dharamsala and Bimthang, linking the upper Manaslu valley with the route that descends towards the Marsyangdi side.

The crossing starts from Dharamsala at about 4,460 meters and continues upward to 5,106 meters before descending towards Bimthang. There is no technical climbing on the normal trekking route, so trekkers do not need ropes or specialist mountaineering skills.

The higher you go, the more open the landscape becomes. Forests and dense vegetation disappear, leaving rocky slopes, high mountain terrain and, depending on conditions, snow and ice.

How Difficult Is the Larkya La Pass Crossing?

Larkya La Pass difficulty comes mainly from its elevation, the long crossing day, uneven terrain and possible snow or ice. It is a challenging but non-technical high-altitude pass, so no climbing skills are needed.

These conditions can be demanding for first-time trekkers, so proper preparation and acclimatization are important before attempting the pass.

5,106 Meters of Altitude

At 5,106 meters, Larkya La is well above 5,000 meters, where the lower oxygen level can noticeably affect your pace. Breathing becomes harder, breaks become more frequent and even a steady climb can feel exhausting. This is also where the risk of altitude sickness is highest on the entire Manaslu Circuit.

This is why reaching the pass is not simply a matter of being physically strong. You need to arrive after gradually gaining altitude and allow your body enough time to adapt.

A Long Day on the Trail

The complete crossing from Dharamsala to Bimthang generally takes around 8–10 hours. The actual duration depends on your fitness, pace, weather, snow and the condition of the trail.

The climb to the top is only part of the day. After reaching the pass, you still have a long descent ahead, so saving enough energy for the second half is important.

Rocky and Uneven Ground

The trail around Larkya La can be rocky and uneven. Depending on the season, snow or ice may also cover parts of the route.

When the surface becomes slippery, careful footing matters more than maintaining your normal walking speed.

Why Is Larkya La One of the Hardest Days of the Manaslu Circuit?

Larkya La is one of the hardest days of the Manaslu Circuit because it combines the route’s highest altitude with a long ascent and descent.

You begin the day already above 4,000 meters, continue climbing beyond 5,000 meters and then walk for several more hours after reaching the pass.

There is also a cumulative effect. Your body has already spent several days trekking, and the thin air at high altitude makes recovery and movement slower.

The challenge is therefore not just the height of Larkya La. It is the combination of altitude, distance, terrain and accumulated fatigue.

How Long Does It Take to Cross Larkya La?

The Larkya La crossing from Dharamsala to Bimthang commonly takes around 8–10 hours and covers a distance of roughly 17–24 km. The time can be shorter or longer depending on your walking pace, weather, snow and trail conditions. You can see the full day-by-day Manaslu Circuit Trek distance breakdown for the rest of the route.

The usual route is:

Dharamsala → Larkya La Pass → Bimthang

The descent is easy to underestimate. Once you reach the pass, you may feel that the difficult part is over, but several hours of downhill walking can still remain.

When Should You Start the Larkya La Crossing?

Trekkers usually start very early because the crossing is a long day and enough daylight is needed for the descent. Many itineraries leave Dharamsala around 3:00–4:00 AM, although the exact time depends on the season, weather and your guide’s plan.

In autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May), an early departure allows more time to complete the pass before later-day weather changes. Crossing Larkya La Pass in October or November is generally considered one of the most favorable windows, with clearer skies and more stable trail conditions.

In winter, an early start is even more important because daylight hours are shorter and snow or ice may slow progress.

The departure time should always be based on the actual conditions rather than a fixed clock time alone.

Larkya La Pass Safety Tips

Leave Dharamsala Early

Set off early, usually around 3:00–4:00 AM, so you have enough daylight for the climb and long walk to Bimthang. Ask your guide about the exact departure time the evening before.

Keep Your Warm Gear Handy

Do not pack your gloves, jacket, hat or face cover at the bottom of your bag. Keep them where you can reach them easily because temperatures are very low in the early morning.

Walk at Your Own Pace

Do not try to keep up with faster trekkers. Walk slowly, take short breaks when needed and save enough energy for the long descent after reaching the pass.

Use Two Trekking Poles

Use both poles when the trail is rocky, snowy or slippery. They can help with balance and reduce pressure on your knees during the downhill section.

Check Your Boots Before Leaving

Make sure your boots are properly tied and have a good grip before starting. If snow is expected, ask your guide whether you need microspikes or crampons for that day’s conditions.

Take Small Sips and Short Breaks

Carry enough water and drink regularly rather than waiting until you are very thirsty. Take short breaks to catch your breath, but avoid sitting for too long in the cold.

Do Not Ignore How You Feel

Tell your guide if you develop a strong headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual weakness or trouble breathing. Do not continue higher or force the crossing when you are feeling seriously unwell.

Be Careful After Reaching the Pass

Reaching Larkya La can feel like the finish, but the descent to Bimthang still takes several hours. Take a short rest, enjoy the views, then start down carefully while you still have enough daylight.

What Should You Carry on the Larkya La Crossing?

You do not need your entire trekking bag for the pass day. Keep the things you may need during the crossing easily accessible.

  • Warm jacket
  • Thermal layers
  • Thick gloves
  • Warm hat
  • Face or neck covering
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Water
  • Energy snacks
  • Two trekking poles
  • Headlamp
  • Waterproof outer layer
  • Personal medication
  • Microspikes or crampons when required
  • Gaiters in snowy conditions

Keeping these items near the top of your daypack makes it easier to respond when the temperature or trail conditions change.

How Should You Prepare for Larkya La?

The best preparation for Larkya La is to build endurance before the trek and manage your energy carefully during the route.

Long hikes, uphill training and back-to-back walking days can help prepare you for the physical workload. You should also avoid exhausting yourself during the days immediately before the crossing.

Once you reach Dharamsala, the goal is not to prove how fast you can climb. A steady pace, regular hydration, enough food and proper rest are much more useful.

You should also remember that a pace that feels comfortable at lower elevations may feel very different above 5,000 meters.

What Is the Trail Like Near Larkya La?

As you leave Dharamsala, the landscape becomes more open and rugged. Forests are largely behind you, and the trail moves through rocky high-altitude terrain.

Depending on the season and recent weather, parts of the route may be covered in snow or ice. Fresh snow can hide uneven ground and make established tracks more difficult to follow.

The area is also exposed to wind and cold because there is little vegetation to provide shelter. This is why warm clothing and careful footing are important even when the lower Manaslu valley is experiencing milder weather.

What Can You See Around Larkya La Pass?

As you climb higher towards Larkya La, the scenery changes from the villages and green valleys below to wide, open mountain landscapes. The trail passes rocky slopes and high alpine ground, with snow covering parts of the route depending on the season.

Near the pass, you can see Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru and Annapurna II when the weather is clear. The prayer flags at Larkya La add color to the otherwise rocky landscape, while the surrounding peaks make the crossing feel even more rewarding.

After crossing the pass, the scenery begins to change again as you descend towards Bimthang. The landscape gradually becomes less barren, and the mountain views continue to follow you along the trail.

Take a little time to enjoy these views during the crossing rather than focusing only on reaching the top. For many trekkers, these changing landscapes are one of the most memorable parts of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
