Manaslu Circuit Trek Distance: Total Distance & Daily Walking Hours

Manaslu Circuit Trek Distance and Walking Hours Guide.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is about 177 km (110 miles) on the standard route from Machha Khola to Dharapani. The exact distance can vary depending on where you start and finish, whether you use a jeep on the lower sections, and whether you add side trips.

Most trekkers spend around 12–14 days on the trekking route, with daily walking generally taking 5–8 hours. The distance is not the same every day. Lower sections tend to cover more kilometres, while the walking days become shorter as you reach higher elevations and prepare for the Larkya La Pass crossing.

What is the Total Distance of the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The standard Manaslu Circuit Trek covers approximately 177 km from Machha Khola to Dharapani. This is a widely used distance, but it isn’t a fixed number for every itinerary because start points, finish points and optional routes can differ.

A group of trekkers is walking along a narrow mountain trail.

The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki Valley before reaching Samagaon and Samdo. From Dharamsala, the route climbs to Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters and then descends through Bimthang towards Dharapani.

A 177 km trek may sound straightforward when viewed as a number, but the route is not flat. Steep climbs, long descents, rocky paths and high-altitude sections can make a shorter day feel harder than a longer one at lower elevation.

Does the Starting Point Change the Manaslu Trek Distance?

Yes, your starting point can change how many kilometres you walk. Road access now allows trekkers to begin farther along the lower section of the route.

Machha Khola

Machha Khola is the usual starting point for current Manaslu itineraries. Starting here gives you the standard lower section of the circuit without needing to walk from Soti Khola.

Soti Khola

Starting from Soti Khola adds the trail between Soti Khola and Machha Khola, increasing both the walking distance and the number of trekking days.

Jagat

Some trekkers take a jeep beyond Machha Khola and start walking from Jagat. This removes the lower Machha Khola to Jagat section and reduces the total distance walked.

Starting from Jagat can be useful for a shorter itinerary, but you will miss part of the lower Budhi Gandaki Valley.

Does the Finishing Point Affect the Distance?

Yes. Finishing at Tilije instead of Dharapani can reduce the total walking distance.

Most standard itineraries continue to Dharapani after Bimthang and Tilije. Some, however, arrange road transport from Tilije and finish the walking section there.

This small difference is enough to change the total distance quoted by different trekking companies.

Some trekkers also continue from Dharapani towards the Annapurna region, but those additional kilometres are outside the standard Manaslu Circuit.

The first and final days are mainly transport days. The actual trekking distance begins at Machha Khola.

How Does Acclimatization Affect the Walking Distance?

The walking distance becomes shorter in the higher sections partly because acclimatization becomes more important as the altitude increases.

After reaching Samagaon at around 3,530 meters, many itineraries include an acclimatization day before continuing towards Samdo and Dharamsala.

Trekkers may use this day for a short hike to places such as Birendra Lake or Pungyen Gompa and return to Samagaon to sleep. A longer hike towards Manaslu Base Camp is another option on some itineraries.

The next walking days are also relatively short. Samagaon to Samdo is around 8–9 km, while the following section to Dharamsala is much shorter than some of the lower-altitude days.

This gives your body more time to adjust before the Larkya La crossing. So, when comparing Manaslu itineraries, look at daily distance, walking hours and elevation gain, not just the total kilometres.

Which Is the Longest Day on the Manaslu Circuit?

The Dharamsala to Bimthang section via Larkya La Pass is usually the longest and hardest day of the trek.

The Larkya La distance from Dharamsala to Bimthang is roughly 17–24 km depending on the itinerary, and the crossing can take around 8–10 hours. You begin at Dharamsala, climb to 5,106 meters at Larkya La, and then continue downhill towards Bimthang.

The distance is only part of the challenge. Much of the day is spent at high altitude, and the descent comes after the main climb.

Which Days Have the Shortest Walking Distance?

The shortest regular walking days are usually around the higher villages and near the end of the circuit.

Lho to Samagaon, Samagaon to Samdo and Tilije to Dharapani cover fewer kilometres than many of the lower sections.

These shorter days help spread the trek more comfortably as altitude increases and also give trekkers time to recover before or after the Larkya La crossing.

How Many Hours Do You Walk Each Day on Manaslu?

Most trekking days on the Manaslu Circuit take around 5–8 hours of walking. Shorter high-altitude sections can take 3–5 hours, while the Larkya La crossing can take around 8–10 hours.

The actual time depends on your pace, the number of breaks, elevation and trail conditions. Two trekkers covering the same distance may therefore arrive at different times.

Does the 177 km Include the Kathmandu Drive?

No. The 177 km refers to the trekking route, not the full trip from Kathmandu and back.

The road journey from Kathmandu to Machha Khola is counted separately, as is the return from Dharapani or Tilije.

This matters when comparing itineraries because some websites discuss total travel while others only calculate the distance walked.

Does Taking a Jeep Reduce the Manaslu Trekking Distance?

Yes. Using a jeep to start farther along the route can reduce the distance you walk.

For example, starting from Jagat instead of Machha Khola removes the lower section from your trekking distance. Likewise, finishing around Tilije instead of Dharapani saves the final walking section.

The trade-off is simple: fewer kilometres on foot also means less time walking through parts of the traditional route.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Distance FAQs

How many kilometers is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The standard Manaslu Circuit is about 177 km (110 miles) from Machha Khola to Dharapani. The exact distance can be a bit different depending on where you start, where you finish, and any side trips you add.

How many kilometers do you walk each day on Manaslu?

Most trekking days cover around 8–20 km, although the exact distance depends on the section and itinerary. The Larkya La crossing is usually the longest day.

How many days does the Manaslu Circuit Trek take?

Most itineraries take around 12–14 days on the trekking route, from Machha Khola to Dharapani. The total trip length can be longer when you include the road journey from Kathmandu, an extra acclimatization day, or optional side trips such as Tsum Valley.

How many hours a day do you walk on the Manaslu Circuit?

Most days involve around 5–8 hours of walking. Some shorter days take 3–5 hours, while the Larkya La crossing can take around 8–10 hours.

Does starting from Jagat make the Manaslu Circuit shorter?

Yes. Starting from Jagat removes the Machha Khola to Jagat section, reducing the total number of kilometres you walk.

Can I start the Manaslu Circuit from Machha Khola?

Yes. Machha Khola is the usual starting point for current itineraries, and road transport can take trekkers there from Kathmandu.

Can I finish the Manaslu Circuit at Tilije?

Yes. Some itineraries finish the walking section around Tilije and use road transport from there, which makes the total walking distance shorter than an itinerary that continues to Dharapani.

What is the longest walking day on Manaslu?

The Dharamsala to Bimthang section via Larkya La Pass is usually the longest day, covering roughly 17–24 km and taking around 8–10 hours.

Does acclimatization add distance to the Manaslu Circuit?

It can. The acclimatization day at Samagaon often includes a short hike, so those kilometres may be added to your personal walking total even though they are not part of the main route.

Do side trips increase the total Manaslu distance?

Yes. Short walks to places like Manaslu Base Camp, Pungyen Gompa and Birendra Lake add a bit more distance. If you add theTsum Valley extension, that adds a lot more, usually another 40 to 70 km, so the whole trek can end up around 215 to 250 km in total.

Does the 177 km include the Kathmandu to Machha Khola drive?

No. The 177 km figure is for the trekking route. The Kathmandu to Machha Khola road journey and the return trip are separate.

Why does the Manaslu trekking distance differ between companies?

Companies may use different start and finish points, include different side trips or measure certain sections differently. This is why quoted totals can vary even for similar itineraries.
