Rara Lake Information
The Rara Lake is a beautiful lake in Nepal surrounded by green hills that lie in the smallest and the most colorful National Park in Nepal, Rara National Park. The National Park is located in the Jumla and Mugu districts. Nepal's biggest and deepest freshwater lake, the Rara Lake is situated in the farwestern Karnali region of Nepal. The lake is oval in shape with a surface area of 10 square kilometers (4.2 square miles) and the maximum depth of the lake is 167 meters (548 ft), 5.1 kilometers (3.2 miles) long, and 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) wide.
Best time for Rara Lake Trek
There are certainly two distinct seasons for Rara Lake trekking Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) seasons.
During the Spring and Autumn seasons, the weather is stable and the temperature is pleasant so the trekkers have the opportunity to admire the Himalayas reflected in the Lake. The skies are clear, good visibility and the days are neither too hot nor too cold making these seasons suitable for trekking. In addition, the area is covered with colorful blooming rhododendrons in the spring that add unique and incomparable beauty to the lake.
In the summer season (June to August), the forest is covered with a lot of flowers adding unique features to the trekking trail but the challenges may come with the slippery and muddy trail. The temperature might go below the freezing point and sometimes snowfall may occur blocking the way to the lake in the winter season (December to February). Therefore, summer and winter seasons are quite avoidable for Rara Lake trekking.
How to reach Rara Lake?
A journey to Rara Lake is a mesmerizing trek in the Himalayas of Nepal. The short and easy route to complete the Rara Lake trek is taking a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and switching the flight to Talcha Airport - the nearest airport before Rara Lake. It will take around 1-hour flight to reach Nepalgunj and around 30 to 35 minutes to reach Talcha Airport. From Talcha Airport, it will take 3 hours of walk to reach Rara Lake. It is the fastest and easiest way to reach Rara Lake and return.
Drinking Water
Teahouses along the Rara Lake trekking trail offer safe drinking water to the trekkers. Boiled water or mineral water is available at the teahouses however drinking water can be available from water taps or springs. You are recommended to use water purification pills or carbon filters before drinking.
Electricity
The facility electricity is available at all the teahouses and guest houses along the Rara Lake trekking trail. While at lower regions, charging electronic appliances such as mobile phones, cameras, and batteries might not be a problem at higher altitudes charging the electronic may require some additional costs.
Communication
Along the trekking trail, the phone signal is good and the connectivity to the internet is also good. While at Rara Lake, it is difficult to get internet access however you can buy a local sim and use it for calling as well as using the internet after buying a mobile data pack. You can also connect your phone to WiFi while at the teahouses.
