The short and easy trek to Rara Lake is a wonderful opportunity to explore the biggest and deepest lake in Nepal. The trek provides a unique opportunity to hike through off-the-beaten trail of the farwestern region of Nepal. The main attraction of this trek is Rara Lake located at Rara National Park covering an area of 106 square kilometers. The trek is specially designed and prepared for trekkers who have limited time but want to explore the beautiful scenic views and the Blue diamond-like Lake. 


The Rara Lake trekking is one of the most beautiful treks that takes you to Rara Lake in Nepal. Being the queen of the lakes, the Rara Lake attracts thousands of trekkers every year. The glimpses of culture and scenery along the trail are quite different from the rest of Nepal. Located in the high altitude, you can find the lake surrounded by Rara National Park with pine, spruce, and juniper forests. The view of snow-capped Himalayan peaks enhances the attraction of visitors. This incredible and fascinating Rara Lake trek lies in the northwest of Kathmandu in the remote area of Karnali. 


The short Rara Lake trek commences at Talcha after a couple of short flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Talcha Airport. From Talcha Airport, walk for around 3-4 hours enjoying the beautiful views and landscapes of Rara Lake. The Rara Lake lies at an elevation of 3,000 meters/9,842 feet above sea level and the elevated location allows Rara Lake to reflect woods of pine, spruce, and junipers. It also has hundreds of species of wildflowers and herbal plants prospering at its shores. 


On the day of exploration around this pristine Lake, trekkers hike to Chuchemeara Danda, a hill station with a height of 4,090 meters/13,418 feet. The top of Chuchemara Hill offers great views of stunning Rara Lake, the lush green forest surrounding it, and the snow-capped mountain peaks soaring up to the skyline. After the short excursion to explore Rara Lake, trekkers descend back to Talcha and fly back to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.

Features

The surrounding of Rara Lake and Rara National Park is a beautiful and widespread natural water reservoir that has multi-colored flowers blooming at its bank. The Rara Lake trek is one of the best places in Nepal to see the wildlife of the Rara National Park. The dense woodlands of conifer and fir trees are home to over 215 species of birds and 20 species of mammals. Some of the important species include coots, snow cock, different species of pheasants, grebes, mallards, common teal, red-crested Pochard, and gulls. It is also a suitable habitat for more than 500 species of flower and herbal plants including Rhododendrons, Black Juniper, Oak, West Himalayan Spruce, and Himalayan Cypress among others. Rara Lake (Mahendra Tal), is situated at an elevation of 2990 m. MurmaPeak with a height of 6,476 m (21,247 ft) also provides an excellent view of the parking area. The water of the lake is so clean, that we can see under the water to the ground.

Itinerary

To begin the trek, we are taking a flight to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu. It will take us around one hour to reach the western lowland town of Nepalgunj. As the time for our flight approaches closer we drive to the domestic section of Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.


We can explore numerous temples and other sites over there. Nepaljung is a beautiful place in Mid-Western Nepal. It has various communities including native Nepal as well as Madhesi, Hindus, and Muslims. The town has a busy bazaar area and the highest percentage of the Muslim population of any town in Nepal.  


We shall check into our hotel in town. To have a rest, we will stay overnight at a lodge\hotel in the Nepaljung.

On the second day of our trek, early in the morning, our journey leads to Mugu district, where Rara Lake lies. It is in the northwest of Nepal, close to the Chinese border.  


The flight to Mugu, Talcha Airport at 2,957m is an awesome journey catering to incredible views of Nepal’s untouched wilderness. We can see the beautiful views of the mountains from the short flight. After reaching Tancha Airport, the trek to Rara Lake commences.  Throughout the trek, we emerge out to nomadic highland hamlets. The trek is a pleasant jungle walk that highlights several species of birds, species of herbal plants, and the panorama of snow-capped peaks.


After 3-4 hours of the hike from Tancha Airport. We will finally reach the beautiful station with full of greenery, the Rara National Park. We will stay overnight in a hotel\ restaurant on the base of Rara National Park. The evening view of the snowcapped mountains is a wonderful thing to experience from Rara National Park. We can also have a good view of the sunset in the evening.

The third day is the most important day as we are exploring the Rara Lake at its full. So, we wake up early in the morning to have a marvelous view of sunrise from there. After having lunch we will start our hike in the afternoon.


After lunch, we start our hike to Chuchemara Hill from where we can see a full area of Rara Lake. Hence this pleasant walk offers a tremendously wonderful jungle vibe where chirps of birds and activities of highland mammals can be witnessed. From there we can have an outstanding view of untouched nature 360 degrees. The trails to Rara Lake have a wonderful view of the forest. The jungle is very quiet and very beautiful. Different types of trees and plants make the jungle more beautiful. The environment around the lake is very clean and has fresh air around there. The lake provides a clean blue water view and mountain range.


After a couple of hours of hiking around Rara Lake, we will return to our hotel\logs for the overnight stay.

On the 4th day, we will hike back to Tancha airport. We will pack our bags and after lunch, we will start our hike. Hike from Rara to Trek has a different point of view. We will enjoy the hike by seeing different types of agriculture of local people. We can see many different birds on the trail. When we will reach Tancha airport we will take our flight and flight back to Nepaljung.


When we will reach Nepaljung from the flight in half an hour we will stay overnight over there.

We will wake up early in the morning and have a great view of the city. We will explore Nepaljung in our reminding time of flight. When we will reach Kathmandu we will have our interesting short farewell program and end our memorable trek over there.

Rara Lake Information

The Rara Lake is a beautiful lake in Nepal surrounded by green hills that lie in the smallest and the most colorful National Park in Nepal, Rara National Park. The National Park is located in the Jumla and Mugu districts. Nepal's biggest and deepest freshwater lake, the Rara Lake is situated in the farwestern Karnali region of Nepal. The lake is oval in shape with a surface area of 10 square kilometers (4.2 square miles) and the maximum depth of the lake is 167 meters (548 ft), 5.1 kilometers (3.2 miles) long, and 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) wide.


Best time for Rara Lake Trek

There are certainly two distinct seasons for Rara Lake trekking Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) seasons. 


During the Spring and Autumn seasons, the weather is stable and the temperature is pleasant so the trekkers have the opportunity to admire the Himalayas reflected in the Lake. The skies are clear, good visibility and the days are neither too hot nor too cold making these seasons suitable for trekking. In addition, the area is covered with colorful blooming rhododendrons in the spring that add unique and incomparable beauty to the lake. 


In the summer season (June to August), the forest is covered with a lot of flowers adding unique features to the trekking trail but the challenges may come with the slippery and muddy trail. The temperature might go below the freezing point and sometimes snowfall may occur blocking the way to the lake in the winter season (December to February). Therefore, summer and winter seasons are quite avoidable for Rara Lake trekking. 


How to reach Rara Lake?

A journey to Rara Lake is a mesmerizing trek in the Himalayas of Nepal. The short and easy route to complete the Rara Lake trek is taking a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and switching the flight to Talcha Airport - the nearest airport before Rara Lake. It will take around 1-hour flight to reach Nepalgunj and around 30 to 35 minutes to reach Talcha Airport. From Talcha Airport, it will take 3 hours of walk to reach Rara Lake. It is the fastest and easiest way to reach Rara Lake and return. 


Drinking Water

Teahouses along the Rara Lake trekking trail offer safe drinking water to the trekkers. Boiled water or mineral water is available at the teahouses however drinking water can be available from water taps or springs. You are recommended to use water purification pills or carbon filters before drinking. 


Electricity

The facility electricity is available at all the teahouses and guest houses along the Rara Lake trekking trail. While at lower regions, charging electronic appliances such as mobile phones, cameras, and batteries might not be a problem at higher altitudes charging the electronic may require some additional costs.


Communication

Along the trekking trail, the phone signal is good and the connectivity to the internet is also good. While at Rara Lake, it is difficult to get internet access however you can buy a local sim and use it for calling as well as using the internet after buying a mobile data pack. You can also connect your phone to WiFi while at the teahouses.

Along the trekking trail, guest houses and teahouses offer basic accommodation on a twin-sharing basis. The rooms are facilitated with beds, light pillows, warm blankets, comfortable mattresses, and bed sheets. A single supplement will be served on request and it will require additional cost. We ensure you get the best rooms available with a facility of attached toilets and bathrooms during the trekking.


Note: Single rooms are easily available in Kathmandu and lower regions during the trek, but finding them at higher altitudes can be challenging.

About Meal

Teahouses and guest houses along the Rara Lake trekking trail provide 3-course meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They provide freshly cooked and highly nutritious food to the trekkers. During the trek, trekkers have breakfast and dinner at teahouses or guest houses where they spend the nights whereas lunch is taken at the tea houses along the way. 


You have the option to choose from Nepali, continental, Tibetan, and Indian cuisines. The staple dish is Nepali Dal Bhat with vegetable curry, pickles, and seasonal salads. Besides this other options for food items are eggs, soups, noodles, hot tea, coffee, roti (bread) or chapati, jam, etc. 

The difficulty level can be varied according to the altitude level and physical fitness of the trekkers. The short Rara Lake trek is graded as an easy trek that can be covered by beginner and intermediate trekkers easily. 

There are two routes to Rara Lake, and trekkers can choose any according to their interests. You can take a bus from Kathmandu to Jumla and commence a trek or take a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Talcha Airport and start trekking to Rara Lake.

The highest altitude you will encounter during your Rara Lake trekking is Chuchemara Hill with an altitude of 4,039 meters/13,251 feet.
