Lumbini is a settlement, archaeological site, and pilgrimage destination commemorating the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha, c. 563-483 BCE) in Nepal's Province 5, close to the Indian border. The Mauryan ruler Ashoka the Great legally acknowledged it as Buddha's birthplace in 249 BCE (r. 268-232 BCE). Before Ashoka's arrival, the settlement was known by another name, possibly similar but now gone, and was already an important pilgrimage place for followers of the early Buddhist schools. It appears to have been a manicured pleasure garden between the city of Kapilavastu to the east and Devadaha to the southwest, which was controlled by the Shakya and Koliya clans, which were linked by blood. Suddhodana of the Shakya married his cousin Maya of the Koliya, who would become the Buddha's mother.
