Gosaikunda Lake

Gosaikunda Lake is a breathtaking freshwater lake located in the Langtang National Park of Nepal, at an altitude. It holds significance for both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Is situated approximately 4,380 meters (14,370 feet) above sea level covering an area of around 13.8 hectares (34 acres). This beautiful lake lies to the north of Kathmandu nestled between Helambu, Langtang Valley and Langtang National Park. It has long been renowned in society due to its connection with Lord Shiva, the deity associated with power and destruction, in Hindu mythology.

In this area you can find a total of 108 lakes with the ones being Saraswati Lake, Bhairab Lake Surya Lake, Naga Lake and Gosikunda. Among these lakes Gosikunda holds a place, for both Hindus and Buddhists as it is considered a pilgrimage site. Every year devotees from parts of the country visit this lake to take a purifying dip, in its waters.

Religious Beliefs

According to Hindu belief, Lord Shiva is credited with creating Gosaikunda Lake when he drove his Trishula, or Trident, into a mountain in order to draw water out of it to soothe his poisoned throat. People continue to think that the enormous rock beside the lake is a Shiva shrine. There is another who says that those with a pure soul can see Lord Shiva's reflection beneath the river. Samudra Manthan is mentioned in the Hindu scriptures Vishnu Purana, Bhagavata Purana, and the epics Mahabharata and Ramayana as having a direct connection to the beginning of Gosaikunda and providing a very clear explanation.

Although Gosaikunda Lake is primarily considered a place, for Hindus it also holds significance for Buddhist pilgrims particularly in relation to Padmasambhava, who is also known as Guru Rinpoche.

In the tradition Gosaikunda is closely associated with Padmasambhava, a respected figure who played a vital role in spreading Buddhism across the Himalayan regions such, as Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan during the 8th century. According to legend Padmasambhava, a master engaged in meditation at various holy sites including Gosaikunda.
