The Dolpo region was opened in 1989 with the Shey Phoksundo National Park (3555sq.m). It was established in 1984 to preserve a large part of the land in the area. Dolpo is a far-flung and mystique gem of Nepal. It bound to the east and the south by the towering Dhaulagiri and Chure range respectively. Until 1996 foreigners were not allowed access to this region. That is why the culture has largely been unaffected by tourism in this region. The Tibetan style village in Tarap, the big mountains, and monasteries perched at unlikely places, the high passes and people’s inclination towards the “pre-Buddhist Bon Po” religion, make this place even more special. Besides that, the main attraction of the area is the wild and pristine landscape. Geographically, the region is still within Nepal. But it is ethnically attached to Tibet. So this region is like Tibetan Plateau and is generally dry, cold and sparsely vegetated. This region protects one of the last leftovers of traditional Tibetan culture. The houses here are almost buried in sandy soil.
Jomsom, the headquarter of Mustang district is a picturesque far-western town of Nepal. It is a village in the Annapurna mountains of Nepal. It stretches along the bank of the Kali Gandaki river, with a fascinating backdrop of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt Nilgiri. It is primarily an administrative and commercial centre. Here you can see the government officials and merchants rubbing shoulders with the residents of the region, known as Thakalis.
Dolpo Jomsom Trek is the most classic trek. It is another hidden destination & challenging trekking of the Mid-western region of Nepal. It connects the hidden, unexplored and remote Dolpo via Upper Dolpo to Kalidaki River gorge valley, Jomsom. The route demands crossing several high passes (higher than 5,000m). This trek is ideal for thrill-seekers who do not mind getting lost in the wilderness of the Himalayas. As the trails are quiet, and sometimes without human settlements. Shey Phoksundo is one of the most popular spots on the trek. It is situated at an altitude of 3,611.5 m. People's lifestyles, Buddhist Monasteries, Tibetan plateau, and the traditional culture are the main attraction of this route. The most interesting factor of this trek is that we get to witness the cultural difference of the people of different regions, had centuries ago. The path passes through a clam forest and lastly to Palam, a winter settlement used by the people of Ringmo. You may spot blue sheep, Himalayan Black bears, leopards, wolves, and the exceptional snow leopards. Moreover, Dolpo Jomsom trekking gives a very different experience compared to some of the more popular treks in Nepal. It passes through a wild and rugged region and immerses itself in Tibetan-Buddhist culture. And Upper Dolpo, the Shey Gompa trek is tough trekking, suitable for experienced trekkers who can walk up to 7 hours a day. This camping trek is suitable for you if you want to spend your walking holiday in the hidden part of the world. It makes you feel better that you are in a different world.
