Trekking Duration 4–6 hours
Max Altitude 2,874 m
Difficulty Moderate – suitable for beginner-friendly trek
Accommodation
Accommodation Teahouse / Lodge in Ghorepani
Meals
Meals Full board (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Today is the first day of your 3-Day Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. Your adventure begins with a 1.5 to 2-hour scenic drive from the lakeside city of Pokhara toward the deep valleys of the Annapurna region. Most travelers stop at Nayapul, but we utilize 4WD Jeeps to reach as far as the terrain allows, maximizing your time on the actual mountain trails.

Pro Tip: Keep your permits (ACAP and TIMS) in your daypack, not your main luggage. You will need them for the first major checkpoint.

9:00 The Birethanti Gateway & Permit Registration

Your trek officially enters the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) at the Birethanti checkpoint. This vibrant village sits at the stunning confluence of the Modi Khola and Bhurung Khola rivers.

  • Permit Formalities: Our licensed guides will handle your registration at the ACAP office while you enjoy the views of the roaring glacial waters.
  • The Route: From here, the trail follows the banks of the Bhurung Khola, passing through the sub-tropical forests of the lower foothills.

Around 11:30, we stop for a fresh, local lunch in Tikhedhunga (1,540m). We recommend a high-carb meal like Dal Bhat to fuel the big climb ahead.

12:30 The Ulleri Challenge (The 3,200 Stone Steps)

Immediately after lunch, we cross the suspension bridge and tackle the 3,200 stone steps. This is the most physically demanding part of the day.

  • What to expect: A steep, relentless ascent of over 3,200 stone-paved steps.
  • Why it’s worth it: As you gain altitude, the air cools, and the first views of Annapurna South (7,219m) and Hiunchuli begin to peek over the horizon.
  • Insider Insight: Don’t rush. The “Ulleri Steps” are a test of rhythm, not speed. Stop at the local tea shops halfway up for fresh Himalayan orange juice.

3:00 Entering the Ancient Rhododendron Forests

Beyond the village of Ulleri (2,080m), the trail softens as it enters deep, moss-covered forests of oak and rhododendron (Nepal’s national flower). If you are trekking in Spring (March–April), the entire canopy turns shades of crimson and pink. You will pass through Banthanti and Nangethanti, ideal spots for a quick “Tibetan Bread” and honey tea break.

4:30 Arrival at Ghorepani (The Blue Village)

By late afternoon, you will reach the iconic blue-roofed houses of Ghorepani (2,874 m). This historic village was once a rest stop for ancient salt traders (Ghorepani translates to “Horse Water”).

  • Final Checkpoint: We pass a second police checkpoint in Lower Ghorepani before ascending for 15 minutes to our teahouse in Upper Ghorepani.
  • The Reward: From your teahouse window, the massive Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and the entire Annapurna Massif stand directly in front of you.

4:30 am The Pre-Dawn Ascent to Poon Hill (3,210 m)

Your day begins in the crisp, cold air of the early morning. We start with a headlamp-lit hike to the most famous viewpoint in the Annapurna region.

  • The Climb: A steady 45-to-60-minute ascent up stone steps from Ghorepani. While it is dark, the trail is well-trodden and safe for all ages.
  • The Reward: Witness the world-famous Himalayan sunrise. Watch the sky transition from deep indigo to fiery orange as the sun crests over the horizon.
  • Insider Insight: It is freezing at the top! There is a small summit tea shop where you can buy hot ginger tea and coffee. Holding a warm cup while watching the sun hit the peaks is the quintessential Ghorepani experience.

06:45 AM – 07:15 AM | Sunrise Magic:

Watch the sun crest over the Himalayas. You are looking at a 360-degree panorama:

  • To the West: The massive Dhaulagiri (8,167m)—the 7th highest mountain in the world.
  • Directly Ahead: Annapurna South (7,219m) and the distinct “Fishtail” peak, Machhapuchhre (6,993m).
  • The Difference: Note that while Annapurna South looks larger from here, the actual summit of Annapurna I (8,091m) is visible just behind it.

Note: From the Poon Hill tower, you aren’t just looking at “mountains”—you are witnessing some of the highest peaks on Earth.

8:00 AM | The Deurali Pass & Jungle Ridges

After a hearty breakfast back in Ghorepani, we head east toward Tadapani. This section of the trail is often rated by trekkers as even more beautiful than the morning climb.

  • What to expect: A “surprise” climb! You will ascend toward the Deurali Pass (3,090m), which offers eye-level views of the mountains that rival Poon Hill but with fewer crowds.
  • The Environment: We enter a primeval forest of ancient, moss-draped rhododendrons. The trail follows a narrow ridge with deep, lush gorges on either side.
  • The Route: Pass through Banthanti, a small settlement tucked under massive rock cliffs—the perfect spot for a lunch break alongside the sound of hidden waterfalls.

1:30 PM |Descent into the Deep Forest

The afternoon is spent descending through thick jungle and over wooden bridges. The air here is rich with oxygen and the scent of damp earth and pine.

  • The Terrain: Expect some steep downhill sections through the woods. Trekking poles are highly recommended here to save your knees on the descent toward the Bhurungdi Khola.
  • Wildlife: Keep an eye out for Langur monkeys swinging through the trees and the colorful Danphe (Lophophorus), Nepal’s national bird, which often hides in these high-altitude bushes.

04:30 PM |Arrival at Tadapani (The Ridge Village)

By late afternoon, you reach Tadapani (2,630m). Unlike other villages tucked in valleys, Tadapani sits directly on a sharp mountain ridge.

  • The View: Many photographers prefer Tadapani over Poon Hill because you are significantly closer to Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South.
  • The Experience: The village is small and cozy. As the sun sets, the “Fishtail” peak turns a brilliant purple and pink, visible right from your teahouse porch.

Traveler Review Insights:

  • It’s a perfect and short trek if you are a first-time trekker.
  • This trek is all about the stairs, so be careful with your knees!
  • Even when the weather wasn’t perfect in April, the views of Annapurna and Fishtail peaks were stunning.
  • The tea at Poon Hill made the sunrise moment even more memorable.

Day 3

Tadapani to Shyaulbazar Trek via Ghandruk and Drive to Pokhara

Total Distance ~10 km / 6.2 miles
Walking Duration
Walking Duration 4–5 Hours
Trek End Point Shyauli Bazar
Transport Private Jeep/Vehicle to Pokhara

Today is the last day of the 3-Day Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. In the moring round 8 o’clock, you will enjoy a final mountain breakfast at Tadapani (2,630m). The morning sun hits Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South directly in front of your teahouse.

Around 8:30 am, we start our trek. We begin the descent through a deep, moss-covered forest of rhododendron and oak trees. This is a prime spot for birdwatching and spotting Langur monkeys swinging through the canopy. At around 10:10 Am a short break at Bhaisi Kharka. This small meadow clearing is used by local buffalo herders. From here, the trail opens up to reveal the vast, terraced farmlands of the Modi Khola valley.

In midday, around 10:30 AM, you will arrive in Ghandruk, one of the largest and most famous Gurung settlements in Nepal. The village is renowned for its clean stone-paved alleys and traditional slate-roofed houses.

We visit this 200-year-old traditional house turned museum. Explore ancient Gurung tools, weapons, and try on traditional Tamu costumes for a memorable Himalayan photo.

After exploring the museum, you will have lunch. Enjoy a meal at a local teahouse overlooking the valley. This is the best place to try authentic Ghandruk-style Dal Bhat while enjoying a close-up view of Hiunchuli.

Afternoon: The Modi Khola Valley & Final Walk (01:30 PM – 04:00 PM)

  • 01:30 PM | Steep Descent to Shyauli Bazar: After lunch, we follow a steep stone staircase down toward the valley floor. You will pass through vibrant terraced fields where locals grow millet, wheat, and mustard.
  • 03:30 PM | Reaching the Modi Khola: The trail finally meets the banks of the roaring Modi Khola river. This glacial water flows directly from the Annapurna Sanctuary and accompanies you to the road head.
  • 04:00 PM | Trek Ends at Shyauli Bazar: Your trekking journey concludes here. Our private 4WD Jeep or vehicle will be waiting for you to begin the transition back to city life.

3 Days Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek from Pokhara

Good to Know

Your Journey, Step by Step

Best Time for Ghorepani Poonhill Trek

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the few Himalayan treks that can be completed year-round, but the experience varies greatly by season. For the best mountain visibility, sunrise colours, and stable weather, the accessible months are Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November).

Autumn

(September – November) – Best Season Overall

Autumn is widely considered the best month/season for Poon Hill.
If you want crystal-clear Himalayan views and golden sunrise moments — this is your window.

Why Autumn is perfect:

  • Extremely clear skies = sharp sunrise views
  • Comfortable daytime temperature for beginners
  • Dry trail → easier climb to Ulleri stairs
  • Local festivals (Dashain, Tihar, Chhath) make villages vibrant

Note: If you want the classic Poon Hill sunrise postcard, choose October or early November.

Spring (March – May) – Most Beautiful for Rhododendrons

Spring offers a colorful trail experience, especially in Ghorepani and Deurali.

Highlights of Spring:

  • Rhododendron forests at peak bloom
  • Ideal for nature & photography lovers
  • Pleasant temperature + clear trails
  • Great season for no high-altitude experience trekkers

Summer/Monsoon (June – August) – For Greenery Lovers Only

Monsoon brings rain, leeches, and slippery trails — but it has its own appeal.

Pros:

  • Lush green forests + waterfalls
  • Very few trekkers → peaceful route

Cons:

  • Low visibility, rain clouds over Poon Hill
  • Landslides & muddy trail sections possible

Note: Possible only with rain gear + flexible schedule

Winter (December – February) – Cold but Magical Views

Winter delivers dramatic skies — the air is dry, crisp, and very clear.
But cold nights require proper clothing.

Expect:

  • Snowy landscapes around Ghorepani ❄

  • Excellent sunrise visibility

  • Very peaceful, fewer tourists

  • Sub-zero mornings (layers required)

Note: Great for adventurous trekkers wanting silence, photography & snow scenes.

Difficulty

The Ghorepani Poonhill trek is considered an easy trekking trail especially customized for beginner trekkers. The total distance trekkers will cover is around 22 kilometers/13.67 miles depending on the route chosen. For this Ghorepani Poonhill trek, trekkers will walk around 5 to 6 hours per day on fairly relaxed terrain. The highest altitude you will encounter during this trek is 3,210 meters in Poonhill.

Since the trek doesn’t gain high altitude, the risk of altitude sickness is very low. Though the trek is not physically demanding, some preparations especially uphill climbs and adequate physical fitness of the trekkers are advantageous.

Extension of Treks

After the completion of the short and easy Ghorepani Poonhill trek, the trek can be extended with another thrilling and adventurous trek in the Annapurna region. We Bold Himalaya offers the flexibility to customize your own itinerary according to your personal preferences. You can extend your trek with Annapurna Base Camp Trek and Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek.

Facilities

Electricity and Internet

Access to electricity and Internet along the trekking trail is available at the teahouses and lodges. Charging the electronic devices and getting internet access at teahouses or lodges may come along with some additional charges.

You can also get cellular connectivity if you use Nepali sims like NTC and Ncell.

Drinking Water

Drinking Water during the Ghorepani Poonhill trek is available from different sources. Trekkers are advised to use water purification pills or carbon filters before drinking the water from taps or springs. Safe drinking water like mineral water and boiled water are available at teahouses and lodges after purchasing some extra fees.

It is recommended to drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water per day and carry 3 to 4 water bottles for refilling purposes.

Transportation

For the Ghorepani Poonhill trek, two means of transportation, airplane, and tourist bust or private vehicle are included. To reach Pokhara, we can use either a tourist bus (drive for 6 hours) or an early morning flight (30 minutes). From Pokhara, we take a private vehicle to reach Ulleri from where the trek begins.

When returning, we take a private jeep from Ghandruk to Pokhara and a tourist bus from Pokhara to Kathmandu.

Packing List

The items that must be included in the Packing List are:

Sunhat or scarf

Headlamp with extra batteries

Sunscreen and sunglasses

Hiking shirts or T-shirts

Fleece Jacket and down jacket

Windproof or waterproof jacket

Hiking shorts or trousers

Woolen socks and Hiking boots

Backpack or day pack

Water bottles and water purifiers

Trekking poles and sleeping bags

Toothbrush and toothpaste

First aid kits

Cameras, Phones, and binoculars

Power banks or portable chargers

Physical Difficulty & Preparation

  • The “Ulleri Stairs” Factor: While the trek is rated Easy to Moderate, the first day involves climbing 3,200+ stone steps. You don’t need to be an athlete, but being comfortable with stairs will make your trip much more enjoyable.
  • Altitude Awareness: You will reach a maximum altitude of 3,210m. This is generally safe, but we recommend a steady pace and staying hydrated to prevent minor headaches.

Teahouse Facilities & Life on the Trail

  • Electricity & Charging: Most teahouses offer charging for cameras and phones for a small fee ($2–$5). We recommend bringing a power bank.
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: Available in most villages (Everest Link or local routers), but it can be slow or unstable during bad weather. It’s the perfect time to “unplug.”

  • Hot Showers: Available at almost every stop. Some use gas geysers, others solar. Expect to pay a small fee ($3–$5) for a hot shower.

  • Drinking Water: To reduce plastic waste in the Annapurna Conservation Area, we encourage using filtered water or purification tablets rather than buying plastic bottles.

Permits & Logistics

  • Documentation: You must have your ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) and TIMS Card. If you book with Bold Himalaya, we handle all the paperwork for you—just bring 4 passport-sized photos!
  • The Jeep Advantage: Remember, our 3-day itinerary utilizes private 4WD vehicles to skip the dusty lower roads, meaning you start your trek in the beautiful forest, not on a road with traffic.

Accommodation on the Poon Hill Trek: What to Expect

The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is famous for its “Teahouse Trekking” experience. These are charming, family-run mountain lodges that offer a blend of rustic adventure and genuine Himalayan hospitality. While you are deep in the mountains, you will be surprised by the comfort available.

1. The Rooms: Cozy & Traditional

  • Twin Sharing: Most rooms feature two single beds with mattresses, pillows, and clean sheets.

  • The “Tadapani” View: In villages like Tadapani and Ghorepani, many rooms are designed with large windows so you can see Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) or Dhaulagiri without even leaving your bed.

  • Warmth: Rooms are not heated, but the wooden walls provide insulation. We provide heavy blankets, but bringing a sleeping bag liner is recommended for extra warmth and hygiene.

2. Dining & Common Areas

  • The Heart of the House: Every teahouse has a central dining hall with a large wood-burning stove (Bukhari) in the middle. This is where trekkers gather in the evening to dry their socks, drink ginger tea, and share stories.

  • Meals: You will enjoy freshly prepared “Full Board” meals. From the famous Dal Bhat Power (lentil soup, rice, and curry) to international favorites like pasta, pancakes, and even apple pie in Ghorepani.

3. Modern Facilities in the Wilderness

  • Toilets: Most teahouses now offer a mix of Western-style sit-down toilets and traditional squat toilets. In lower villages like Ghandruk, you may find “attached bathrooms,” but in higher areas, bathrooms are typically shared.

  • Hot Showers: Available for a small fee ($3–$5). Most lodges use solar power or gas geysers. Pro Tip: Shower in the afternoon before the sun goes down and the temperature drops!

  • Charging & Wi-Fi: You can charge your cameras and phones in the common area (usually $2–$5 per device). Wi-Fi is available but can be slow during peak hours—perfect for sending a quick photo home, but not for streaming videos.

A fantastic experience for anyone who is moderately fit and loves nature! From Ghorepani to Poon Hill, make sure to leave at least an hour before sunrise—the view from Poon Hill is absolutely breathtaking. There’s a kiosk at the top where you can buy water, tea, cookies, and more.

Reaching Ghorepani depends on your fitness level and how much time you have. The quickest way is to take a jeep from Naya Pul to Banthati and hike up from there, which takes about 3–4 hours depending on stops and pace. The trail is partially groomed.

I’m especially grateful to the Bold Himalaya team, who encouraged me and made it possible. They were extremely supportive and helpful throughout the trek!
