History of Tiger Nest Monastery

The story of Taktsang, also known as Tigers Nest dates back, to 747 AD when Guru Padmasmbhava or Guru Rinpoche selected a cave on a rock cliff for meditation. In a form as Guru Dorji Drolo he rode on a tigress to tame the spirits in the area. It is said that the tigress was actually Yeshi Tshogyal, Guru Rinpoches consort, who transformed herself into a creature to conquer the spirits. Legend also tells of Yeshi Tshogyal turning into a tigress to transport Guru Rinpoche from Singye Dzong in Eastern Bhutan to Taktsang. Following this journey Guru Rinpoche meditated at the location. Appeared in eight different forms. Taktsang monastery became a site in the Himalayan Buddhist realm.


During his time at Taktsang Guru Rinpoche revealed the Mandala of Pelchen Dorje Phurpa. Imparted teachings, to his followers. He meditated in the cave for three years three months, three weeks and three days before subduing spirits and hiding treasures for the benefit of all living beings.
