Physical Difficulty & Preparation
- The “Ulleri Stairs” Factor: While the trek is rated Easy to Moderate, the first day involves climbing 3,200+ stone steps. You don’t need to be an athlete, but being comfortable with stairs will make your trip much more enjoyable.
- Altitude Awareness: You will reach a maximum altitude of 3,210m. This is generally safe, but we recommend a steady pace and staying hydrated to prevent minor headaches.
Teahouse Facilities & Life on the Trail
- Electricity & Charging: Most teahouses offer charging for cameras and phones for a small fee ($2–$5). We recommend bringing a power bank.
-
Wi-Fi Connectivity: Available in most villages (Everest Link or local routers), but it can be slow or unstable during bad weather. It’s the perfect time to “unplug.”
-
Hot Showers: Available at almost every stop. Some use gas geysers, others solar. Expect to pay a small fee ($3–$5) for a hot shower.
-
Drinking Water: To reduce plastic waste in the Annapurna Conservation Area, we encourage using filtered water or purification tablets rather than buying plastic bottles.
Permits & Logistics
- Documentation: You must have your ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) and TIMS Card. If you book with Bold Himalaya, we handle all the paperwork for you—just bring 4 passport-sized photos!
-
The Jeep Advantage: Remember, our 3-day itinerary utilizes private 4WD vehicles to skip the dusty lower roads, meaning you start your trek in the beautiful forest, not on a road with traffic.
Accommodation on the Poon Hill Trek: What to Expect
The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is famous for its “Teahouse Trekking” experience. These are charming, family-run mountain lodges that offer a blend of rustic adventure and genuine Himalayan hospitality. While you are deep in the mountains, you will be surprised by the comfort available.
1. The Rooms: Cozy & Traditional
-
Twin Sharing: Most rooms feature two single beds with mattresses, pillows, and clean sheets.
-
The “Tadapani” View: In villages like Tadapani and Ghorepani, many rooms are designed with large windows so you can see Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) or Dhaulagiri without even leaving your bed.
-
Warmth: Rooms are not heated, but the wooden walls provide insulation. We provide heavy blankets, but bringing a sleeping bag liner is recommended for extra warmth and hygiene.
2. Dining & Common Areas
-
The Heart of the House: Every teahouse has a central dining hall with a large wood-burning stove (Bukhari) in the middle. This is where trekkers gather in the evening to dry their socks, drink ginger tea, and share stories.
-
Meals: You will enjoy freshly prepared “Full Board” meals. From the famous Dal Bhat Power (lentil soup, rice, and curry) to international favorites like pasta, pancakes, and even apple pie in Ghorepani.
3. Modern Facilities in the Wilderness
-
Toilets: Most teahouses now offer a mix of Western-style sit-down toilets and traditional squat toilets. In lower villages like Ghandruk, you may find “attached bathrooms,” but in higher areas, bathrooms are typically shared.
-
Hot Showers: Available for a small fee ($3–$5). Most lodges use solar power or gas geysers. Pro Tip: Shower in the afternoon before the sun goes down and the temperature drops!
-
Charging & Wi-Fi: You can charge your cameras and phones in the common area (usually $2–$5 per device). Wi-Fi is available but can be slow during peak hours—perfect for sending a quick photo home, but not for streaming videos.
