In the land where the winds whisper through ancient corridors in the Himalayas and time stands still, the journey from Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang begins as more than a trek, but as an opportunity to find the last hidden worlds in Nepal. Nepal’s most remote and extraordinary trans-Himalayan journey, the Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang Trek, links two of the country’s most culturally preserved regions – Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang. This challenging adventure takes trekkers deep into the rain-shadow areas of the Himalayas, where landscapes resemble the Tibetan plateau, vast, arid, and dramatically sculpted by wind and time.

Upper Dolpo is one of the highest inhabited domains in the world. The Upper Dolpo is located in the remote northwestern region of Nepal, and is a challenging Himalayan adventure that takes you through untouched landscapes, high mountain passes, and ancient Bon and Buddhist villages. Known for its raw beauty, the region features pristine high-altitude lakes like Shey Phoksundo Lake and centuries-old monasteries, offering a glimpse into preserved culture and wilderness far from modern civilization.

Upper Dolpo is famous for the filming location of the 1999 Himalayan movie ‘Caravan’, showcasing its dramatic landscapes and traditional Tibetan culture. It was the first Nepalese film to be nominated in the Best Foreign Film Category.

Entering Upper Mustang, often referred to as the ‘Last Forbidden Kingdom’, trekkers experience a striking shift in landscape and culture. The region’s capital, Lo Manthang, reveals a walled medieval city rich in Tibetan heritage, ancient monasteries, royal palaces, and traditional mud-brick houses. The Upper Mustang trek takes you through this culturally rich and visually striking landscape. Unlike other treks in Nepal, it lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, which is suitable even during the monsoon season.

Highlights of the Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang Trek

1. Remote Trans-Himalayan Journey: Experience one of Nepal’s most isolated and less-traveled routes, connecting Upper Dolpo with Upper Mustang.

2. Shey Phoksundo Lake: Witness the stunning turquoise waters of Shey Phoksundo Lake, one of the most beautiful and pristine lakes in Nepal.

3. Ancient Bon and Buddhist Culture: Explore centuries-old monasteries and traditional villages influenced by Tibetan Buddhism and the ancient Bon religion.

4. Crossing High Mountain Passes: Challenge yourself with multiple high-altitude passes, offering panoramic views of rugged Himalayan landscapes.

5. Shey Gompa (Crystal Monastery): Visit the sacred Shey Gompa, an important spiritual site surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.

6. Entry into the Forbidden Kingdom: Step into Upper Mustang, once a restricted region with preserved traditions and culture.

7. Lo Manthang: Discover the medieval city of Lo Manthang, rich in history, monasteries, and royal heritage.

8. Unique Landscapes: Trek through barren valleys, deep gorges, wind-carved cliffs, and desert-like terrain resembling the Tibetan plateau.

9. Sky Caves and Ancient Dwellings: Observe mysterious cliffside caves used by ancient civilizations in Mustang.

10. Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventure: Enjoy solitude and raw wilderness, far from crowded trekking routes like Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit.

11. Rich Cultural Encounters: Interact with local communities such as the Dolpo-pa and Loba people, preserving traditions for generations.

12. Spectacular Himalayan Views: Enjoy views of peaks like Dhaulagiri and other trans-Himalayan ranges throughout the trek.

Overview of the Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang

The journey to Upper Dolpo and onward to Upper Mustang usually begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by another short flight to Juphal, the main entry point into Dolpo. From here, the trek descends to Sulighat and gradually follows the Bheri River valley. The trail passes through small villages and dense forests before reaching the spectacular Shey Phoksundo Lake. This section offers a mix of green landscapes and dramatic cliffs, marking the transition into the more remote inner Dolpo region.

Beyond Phoksundo, the route becomes more rugged and isolated as it heads toward Shey Gompa, one of the most sacred sites in Dolpo. Trekkers cross high-altitude passes like Kang La, entering the mystical Inner Dolpo where ancient Bon traditions are still practiced. The trail continues through remote settlements such as Saldang, following old salt trading routes that connect Nepal with Tibet. This section is one of the most challenging, with long trekking days, minimal infrastructure, and stunning views of barren, wind-swept landscapes.

As the trek progresses, the route gradually leaves Dolpo and crosses into the Mustang region via high mountain passes. The terrain shifts noticeably into a dry, desert-like environment characteristic of Upper Mustang. The trail eventually leads to the historic walled city of Lo Manthang, the cultural heart of Mustang. Here, trekkers can explore ancient monasteries, royal palaces, and traditional Tibetan villages before descending toward Jomsom, where the trek typically concludes with a flight or overland journey back to Pokhara or Kathmandu.

Good to Know

Your Journey, Step by Step

Best Time to Visit

The trek from Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, making it accessible in multiple seasons. However, each season offers a very different experience:

Autumn (September – November)

Autumn is considered the best overall season. The weather is stable, the skies are crystal clear, and the mountain views are at their finest. Temperatures are comfortable for trekking, and the trails are lively with trekkers. This is also a festive time in Nepal, and you may witness local cultural celebrations along the route, enhancing the overall experience.

Spring (March – May)

Spring is one of the best seasons for this trek. The weather is generally stable, with moderate temperatures and clear skies. Lower regions come alive with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers, adding vibrant color to the landscape. Visibility is excellent, offering stunning views of barren valleys and snow-capped peaks. It’s also a great time for cultural encounters, as villages become more active after winter.

Summer / Monsoon (June – August)

Unlike many treks in Nepal, this route remains a good option during the monsoon because both Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang fall in a rain-shadow area. You’ll experience dry trails, dramatic landscapes, and fewer crowds. However, travel to and from the region (especially flights) can be affected by weather in other parts of Nepal. Trails can be windy and dusty, but the solitude and unique scenery make it worthwhile.

Winter (December – February)

Winter brings harsh conditions, especially in high passes above 5,000 meters. Heavy snowfall can block routes, and temperatures drop significantly, making trekking very challenging. Many villages in Upper Dolpo become deserted as locals move to lower areas. While Upper Mustang remains somewhat accessible, the full Dolpo-to-Mustang route is generally not recommended during winter.

Required Permits for this Trek

Trekking from Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang requires multiple special permits because both regions are classified as restricted areas of Nepal. Here’s what you need to know:

Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit

This is the most important permit for entering Upper Dolpo. It is relatively expensive due to the remoteness and controlled access.

  • Required for trekking beyond Phoksundo Lake
  • Issued only through a registered trekking agency
  • Mandatory to trek with a licensed guide

Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit

To enter Upper Mustang (beyond Kagbeni), you must obtain a separate permit.

  • Fixed permit cost (typically for 10 days)
  • Additional daily fees apply if you stay longer
  • Also requires a guide and agency arrangement

Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit

You need this permit to enter the protected area that covers much of Dolpo, including the famous Shey Phoksundo National Park.

  • Helps conserve wildlife and natural heritage
  • Checked at entry points along the trek

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Since the trek ends in Mustang, which falls under the Annapurna region, you’ll also need a permit for the Annapurna Conservation Area.

  • Required for entry into the Mustang region
  • Covers conservation and trail maintenance

Accommodation In Upper Doplo and Upper Mustang Trek

Accommodation during the trek from Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang varies greatly due to differences in accessibility and infrastructure. Here’s what you can expect:

Accommodation in Upper Dolpo

Upper Dolpo is one of the most remote trekking regions in Nepal, so accommodation is quite basic and often limited.

  1. Camping (Primary Option): Most of the trek in Dolpo is done with fully organized camping. Your trekking crew will set up tents, prepare meals, and manage logistics.
  2. Basic Teahouses (Limited): In a few villages, you may find very simple lodges or homestays. Facilities are minimal, basic beds, shared toilets, and simple local meals.

Accommodation in Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang is comparatively more developed and offers better accommodation options.

Teahouses & Lodges: Well-established teahouses are available in most villages, like Lo Manthang. Rooms are simple but comfortable, usually with twin beds and blankets.

Food in Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang

Food during the trek from Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang is simple, hearty, and designed to provide energy for long trekking days in remote high-altitude terrain.

In Upper Dolpo, meals are mostly prepared by the trekking crew during camping, with a limited variety consisting of staple dishes like dal bhat, noodles, soups, potatoes, and occasional local foods such as Tsampa. Fresh ingredients are scarce, so food is basic but filling.

As you enter Upper Mustang, the food experience improves with the availability of teahouses offering a wider range of options, including rice dishes, pasta, momos, pancakes, and hot drinks like tea and coffee.

Although the menu becomes more diverse, it is still recommended to stick to vegetarian meals for safety and carry extra snacks for added energy. Overall, while food on this trek is not luxurious, it is nutritious and sufficient to support the challenging journey through these remote Himalayan regions.

High Altitude Challenge

The trek from Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang is a true high-altitude adventure, with several sections exceeding 4,000 meters and multiple mountain passes rising above 5,000 meters. As you gain elevation, the air becomes thinner, meaning less oxygen is available for your body, which can lead to altitude-related illnesses if proper precautions are not taken. Trekkers may experience symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath, common signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

To safely complete this trek, gradual acclimatization is essential. Most itineraries include rest days at key points to help your body adjust to the altitude. Staying well-hydrated, maintaining a steady pace, and avoiding rapid ascent are crucial practices. In more serious cases, immediate descent is the best remedy. Due to the remoteness of the region and limited access to medical facilities, preparation is key; carrying basic medication and trekking with an experienced guide can make a significant difference.

Despite the challenges, the high-altitude environment rewards trekkers with breathtaking landscapes, dramatic mountain passes, and a sense of true wilderness that makes the journey both demanding and incredibly fulfilling.
