Bhutan Festival Dates 2024
Bhutan’s festivals, or Tshechus, offer travelers a deep Bhutan cultural experience, blending spirituality, art, and local tradition. These vibrant celebrations are held in the courtyards of ancient dzongs, where monks and laypeople perform sacred Cham dances, colorful rituals, and mask performances to bless attendees.
In 2026, some of the must-see festivals include the Punakha Tshechu (February 27 – March 1) at Punakha Dzong, commemorating Bhutan’s historic victory over Tibetan forces; the Paro Tshechu (March 29 – April 2) at Rinpung Dzong, famous for the unfurling of the giant Thongdrel; and the Thimphu Tshechu (September 21 – 23) at Tashichho Dzong, the capital’s grandest event featuring the most diverse masked dances.
Nature and culture come together during the Rhododendron Festival (April 13–14) at Lamperi Botanical Park, where visitors enjoy blooming rhododendrons, archery contests, traditional games, and local cuisine.
Autumn highlights Bhutan’s endangered Black-Necked Cranes, which arrive in the Phobjikha Valley from Tibet, celebrated on November 11 at Gangtey Goenpa with songs, dances, and schoolchildren dressed as cranes.
Finally, the Druk Wangyel Tshechu on December 13 at Dochula Pass is a unique festival performed by the Royal Bhutan Army against a dramatic Himalayan backdrop. These festivals not only showcase Bhutan’s rich spiritual and artistic traditions but also create unforgettable experiences for travelers seeking authentic cultural immersion.
5 Days Bhutan Tour Difficulty
This 5-Day Bhutan Tour is carefully managed by Bold Himalaya to ensure a comfortable experience suitable for families, seniors, and travelers of all ages. Exploring Bhutan is generally easy in terms of physical exertion, as most sightseeing is done by vehicle, taking you directly to the main attractions.
While the itinerary includes winding mountain roads, driving times can sometimes be long—ranging from 6 to 8 hours—so travelers prone to motion sickness should be prepared with medication.
Walking is optional for most sites, with the exception of the Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) hike, which involves climbing 300 to 800 steps at high altitude. This can be challenging for those not accustomed to hiking, but the trek is manageable with breaks and a steady pace.
Altitude sickness is rarely an issue, as the key destinations remain below 10,000 feet, but staying hydrated is recommended. English-speaking guides accompany all tours, making communication seamless and ensuring that your Bhutan journey is stress-free and enjoyable for everyone.
Altitude Sickness on 4 Nights 5 Days Bhutan Tour
When you travel and trek in Bhutan, you won’t have to worry about altitude sickness. The Tigers Nest Monastery stands at 3,120 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in Bhutan. Another notable spot is Dochula Pass, reaching 3,100 meters above sea level. Altitude sickness isn’t something to be concerned about at these heights.

Bhutan Tour Permits
To enter the “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” travelers must navigate the “High Value, Low Volume” tourism policy. Bold Himalaya handles the entire application process for you, but here is what you need.
1. The Bhutan Visa (e-Visa)
To enter Bhutan, all foreign nationals require a visa, except citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives. While travelers have been able to apply for an e-Visa themselves since 2024, most prefer to use an authorized operator such as Bold Himalaya.
This ensures that all necessary permits, including inter-district travel and monument clearances, are correctly arranged. The visa is generally issued for the exact duration of your tour, so it aligns perfectly with your Bhutan itinerary.
Using a tour operator also reduces the risk of delays or complications at immigration.
2. The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
In 2026, all international visitors are required to pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), which supports Bhutan’s carbon-neutral initiatives, infrastructure, and social welfare programs.
For international tourists, the SDF is USD 100 per person, per night, though a 50% discounted rate applies until August 31, 2027. Children aged 6–12 pay USD 50 per night, and Indian nationals pay Nu/INR 1,200 per person, per night.
This fee is automatically included when you book a tour with an authorized operator like Bold Himalaya, so you don’t need to worry about paying it separately during your visit.
Required Documents for Your Permit
To arrange your Bhutan visa and all necessary route permits, you will need to provide a few essential documents.
First, your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of departure from Bhutan. You will also need to submit a recent passport-sized color photograph taken against a white background; make sure it is a fresh photo rather than a scan of the image in your passport.
While travel insurance was briefly made optional in 2024, it is highly recommended for all travelers, particularly to cover medical emergencies and high-altitude evacuation.
Finally, you must provide a confirmed itinerary, including proof of pre-booked accommodation and licensed guide services, as Bhutan strictly enforces its “High Value, Low Volume” tourism policy to ensure a safe and well-managed visit.
