Lhasa Day Tour: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple & Barkhor Street
After your morning meal your guide will take you on a tour, to the Potala Palace. From its towering heights you’ll get a view of Lhasa city. Your guide will tell you all about the lives and stories of the Dalai Lamas who have lived there and will show you around the halls and treasures inside.
Once you’ve soaked in the splendor of the Potala Palace your next destination is Longwangtan Park at its foot. This peaceful spot provides a perspective to admire the palace and engage in traditional Tibetan cultural activities.
In the afternoon you’ll visit the revered Jokhang Temple—the center of faith. Inside there’s a 12 year statue of Shakyamuni Buddha that looks so real it feels like meeting Buddha in person. Nearby is Barkhor Street, where you can join locals in their rituals by walking clockwise around the temple.
On your guide will bring you to an indoor Tibetan tea house in Lhasa for some sweet tea with locals. Your guide will be there too sharing insights, into interactions and daily life activities.
Lhasa Tour - Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery
Today you’ll have the chance to visit Tibetan Monasteries. Spend a day immersing yourself in the culture and teachings of Buddhism getting a glimpse into the lives of Tibetan monks.
Start your day by visiting Drepung Monastery, the monastery, in Tibet that housed thousands of monks in the past. While strolling through Coqen Hall your guide will share insights into Buddhist beliefs. Introduce you to key historical figures, in Tibetan Buddhism.
Afterward you’ll have the chance to explore the known Loseling College (or a similar institution) providing a peek, into the lives and studies of Tibetan monks. Take a tour of their living quarters to get an understanding of their routines and living arrangements.
In the afternoon you’ll head to Sera Monastery, one of Tibets Gelug monasteries to witness the Tibetan Monks Debate held from 3;00 PM to 5;00 PM every Monday through Saturday. Your guide will describe how Tibetan monks engage in these debates to enhance their learning and academic growth.
The Tibet Museum serves as a gateway to showcase the culture of Tibet. In the evening we will visit Tibets Johkang Temple, which was constructed during Songtsen Gonpos rule, by Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty in 647 AD. We will also explore Barkhor Kora, a street encircling the Jokhang Temple. You will stay overnight at a hotel.
Lhasa - Gyantse - Shigatse
After you finish sightseeing in Lhasa your next stop will be Shigatse, the city, in Tibet. During the journey you can soak in the scenery of Tibet. Get a glimpse into the laid back lifestyle of the local villagers.
Your first destination will be Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibets three lakes. This enchanting lake reveals its splendor as you approach it from the Gambala Mountain Pass (4790m) winding like a sapphire ribbon, with Mt. Noijin Kangsang (7191m) standing majestically in the distance. As you make your way down, to the lakeside explore vantage points that offer up views of the lakes shoreline. Towards the end of the lake you’ll have an opportunity to visit a local family in a nearby village and enjoy a meal with them.
As you continue your journey you will come across the Karola Glacier at an altitude of 5100 meters. Nestled beside the road it appears like a peaceful maiden adorning herself while admiring the snow covered mountains in awe. Once you reach Gyantse take the time to visit the Kumbum Monastery and Pelkhor Chode Monastery. On your way from Gyantse to Shigatse you’ll be treated to views of green barley fields (during summer) and golden fields (in autumn) dotted with charming farms, along the route.
Once you arrive in Shigatse and settle into your hotel make sure to unwind and get ready, for the journey, to Mount Everest scheduled for the day.
Shigatse to Shegar via Sakya
Today we embark on a journey, from Shigatse along the Friendship Highway towards Shegar, where we’ll be treated to breathtaking views along the way. Our route will lead us past the settlement of Lhatse and over the Gyatso La Pass at an elevation of 5,220 meters. A must visit spot is the Natang Monastery offering a enriching stop
Continuing our drive we will make a stop at the Shakya Monastery renowned for housing the gold book. Established in 1073 A.D by Gongjue Jiebu this monastery was designed to propagate his teachings worldwide. In its prime it boasted one of Tibets monastic communities until disrupted by the Cultural Revolution. Sakya Monastery comprises two sections – one located in the south resembling a fortress with a surrounding moat and operational today; while its northern counterpart lies in ruins after being divided into two parts over time. The name “Sakya” derives from its construction, on soil translating to ” earth” in Tibetan lore.
Next we’ll head over to Shegar also known as New Tingri. If we have time we can check out Shegar Dzong, which means the Crystal Fort. This ancient fort stands out as one of Tibets landmarks with its crumbling walls snaking up a mountain that seems unscalable and overlooks the town. From there we might catch a glimpse of Mount Everest in the off horizon.
Shegar to Rongbuk to Everest base camp and drive back to Shigatse
In the morning you’ll begin your journey, towards Mount Everest after having breakfast. As you reach the Gyatsola Pass (5280m) you’ll catch your glimpse of Mount Everest, hidden amidst the mountain range like a blooming lotus flower – a mesmerizing sight by the roadside. Moving further into the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve at Gawula Pass (5198m) you’ll be treated to a view of the Himalayas. Embark, on the road towards Everest Base Camp (5200m) where each bend offers a closer look at the majestic Everest gradually revealing its grandeur before your eyes. This will be your encounter with Everest. Upon reaching Everest Base Camp you’ll be greeted by the towering white pyramid peak of Everest. As the sun sets its warm golden rays will illuminate Everests face—your glimpse of this natural wonder.
After soaking in the splendor of Mount Everest you’ll journey back to Shigatse along another Himalayan route again admiring the beauty of the Himalayas. Before leaving EBC you’ll explore Rongbuk Monastery (5154 meters) the worlds monastery located near Mount Everest. Here both nuns and monks coexist in surroundings.
Next your return journey to Shigatse will take you through Dinggye via a path that deviates from the usual route. At Dinggye Xilin Viewpoint pause to take in not the eastern slope of Mount Everest but also catch a glimpse of Mount Lhotse standing as the worlds fourth highest peak at 8,516 meters. You’ll also be treated to views of the expansive and enchanting landscape, at Mount Everests base.
Upon arriving in Shigatse your tour guide will escort you to the Langma Hall. There you’ll have the opportunity to witness a captivating song and dance presentation while sharing a delightful dinner experience, with other members of your group.
Shigatse - Lhasa
In the morning you can visit the home of the Panchen Lama, at Tashilhunpo Monastery, the monastery in Shigatse. This grand monastery sits on a hillside. Is home to the worlds statue of Maitreya Buddha making it a significant spiritual center in Shigatse. As you explore you may spot monks dressed in hats and red robes moving around the temple. If you’re fortunate you might witness a Dharma ceremony taking place there.
Afterward your journey will take you back to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo River considered sacred, as the Mother River of Tibetans.
Depart with flight from Lhasa to Kathmandu

Your Journey, Step by Step
When traveling to Lhasa from Kathmandu, which’s, at an elevation of 1350 meters and reaching heights above 3000 meters you might encounter Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). The Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour commences and concludes in Kathmandu therefore you will need visas, for both China and Nepal along with a travel permit, for Tibet and EBC. To facilitate your journey you will need to obtain the following visas and permits;
Upon your arrival, in Kathmandu, Nepal, your adventure commences. Therefore you will be required to acquire a visa for entry into Nepal. Securing a Nepal Entry Visa is a process that can be swiftly completed by submitting documents and a passport sized photograph, at the immigration desk upon landing at Kathmandu International Airport.
If you plan to travel from Nepal to Tibet you’ll need a Chinese Group Visa. Make sure to arrive in Nepal at 4 to 5 days before your Tibet trip since the visa application usually takes 3 to 4 working days. Once you’re, in Kathmandu your tour operator will collect your passports and necessary documents. Submit them to the Chinese Embassy on your behalf. Before embarking on your journey, to Tibet the visa will be dispatched to you. To be eligible, for a group visa your group should comprise a minimum of 4 people.
To visit Tibet you need a travel permit. Start by arranging your travel plans and schedule through a travel agency to acquire this authorization. The local team, in Tibet will collect your scanned papers and passports. Submit them to the Tibet Travel Bureau (TTB). Expect the visa to be processed within 9 to 10 working days. Upon your arrival, in Tibet your Tibetan guide will provide you with the permit.
Travelers, from abroad need to obtain an Aliens Travel Permit to visit far off parts of Tibet such as Everest Base Camp. This authorization is provided by the Public Security Bureau (PSB). Your guide will arrange for this permit in Shigatse before your journey, to EBC begins.
Upon your arrival, at Lhasa Gonggar Airport in Tibet you will be greeted by a driver who will accompany you in a private vehicle to your hotel located in Downtown Lhasa. Throughout your two day exploration of Lhasa the vehicle will be at your disposal, for sightseeing purposes. The driver will also drive you all the way from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp and return journey.
