  • Thrilling High-Altitude Adventure: Conquer the challenging Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), a true test for seasoned trekkers.
  • Manaslu Base Camp Experience: Reach close to the foot of the mighty Manaslu and witness glaciers, ice walls, and untouched alpine wilderness.
  • Pungen Gompa: Visit the peaceful and less-visited Pungen Gompa, a hidden Buddhist monastery beneath Manaslu’s massive glaciers.

The Spiritual Trip: Pungen Gompa

Pungen Gompa is a secret haven deep in an elevated pasture beyond Sama Gaon. This place is often considered one of the most spiritual spots on the circuit. As you stand at the monastery, you can see the towering East Face of Manaslu staring right back at you. The silence here is profound, with just the odd sound coming from the cracking ice in the far-off glaciers. It serves as a perfect acclimatisation hike that gives a ‘theatre-seat’ view of the mountain.

Permits needed for Manaslu Circuit with Pungen Gompa

Before starting the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Larke La Pass, it’s important to arrange all the required permits. Trekking in this region is strictly regulated, and carrying the proper documents ensures a smooth and hassle-free journey.

1. Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAC)

The Manaslu region is a restricted area, so all trekkers must obtain the RAC permit. This permit can be secured in Kathmandu or Arughat Bazaar. The fee depends on the duration of your trek, and it is mandatory for all foreign visitors.

2. ACAP Permit (Annapurna Conservation Area Project)

If your trek passes through parts of the Annapurna Conservation Area, you’ll need an ACAP permit. This permit helps preserve the region’s natural and cultural heritage and supports local conservation efforts.

3. TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)

All trekkers in Nepal are required to carry a TIMS card. This card tracks trekkers for safety purposes and can be obtained through a registered trekking agency or at official offices in Kathmandu.

Tips for Trekkers

  • Hiring a guide and/or porter is mandatory for the Manaslu Circuit. Guides also help with permits and ensure your safety.
  • Keep copies of all permits handy during the trek; local authorities may check at checkpoints.
  • Apply for permits well in advance, especially during the peak trekking seasons of spring and autumn.

With the right permits in hand, you can fully enjoy the scenic beauty, cultural experiences, and adventure that the Manaslu Circuit Trek has to offer.

    Good to Know

    Your Journey, Step by Step

    Visa Process to enter Nepal

Citizens from every country require a visa to enter Nepal, except citizens of India. You will need to fulfill the following requirements to get a visa for Nepal.

    • Your original passport must be valid for at least the next two months and have two blank visa pages.
    • Photocopies of the personal information page of your passport.
    • At least one recent passport-size picture of yourself.
    • The completed and signed Nepal Tourist Visa Application form.
    • Valid return flight or travel ticket.
    • Proof of sufficient financial means.
    • Proof of having paid the Nepal visa fee.

    Preparation

Preparation for the trek is all about getting your body, gear, and mindset ready for changing altitude and simple mountain conditions.

A moderate level of fitness is helpful, as you’ll be walking for several hours a day on uneven trails with both ascents and descents. Regular walking, light hiking, or cardio training before the trek makes the journey more comfortable.

    Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is highly recommended for trekking in the Manaslu region. It should clearly cover high-altitude trekking (usually up to at least 5,000-6,000 meters), as well as emergency helicopter evacuation, which can be very expensive in remote mountain areas.

Make sure your policy includes medical treatment, trip cancellation or delay, and loss or damage of baggage and trekking gear. Since the trail is remote and weather can change quickly, evacuation coverage is especially important.

Before starting the trek, carry a digital and printed copy of your insurance details, and share them with your trekking agency or guide so they can act quickly in case of an emergency.

Best Season for Manaslu Circuit Trek

There are two best seasons: Autumn(September, October, November) and Spring(March, April, May).

Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and greener landscapes, while autumn is known for crystal-clear skies after the monsoon and ideal visibility of Manaslu and surrounding peaks. Temperatures are moderate, which makes long trekking days more enjoyable.

    Accommodations & Food

While trekking the Manaslu Circuit, accommodation is primarily in teahouses and lodges along the route. These local lodges offer basic but comfortable facilities, allowing trekkers to rest and enjoy the warm hospitality of the region.

    1. Tea Houses & Lodges
    • Most villages along the trail have teahouses where trekkers can find beds, blankets, and meals.
    • The quality varies: larger villages offer better facilities, while remote villages may have simpler rooms with shared bathrooms.
    • Hot showers are sometimes available, usually for an additional charge.
    1. Camping Option
    • Some trekking agencies provide camping packages, especially in very remote areas where tea houses are limited.
    • Tents, sleeping bags, and meals are provided by the trekking agency.
    1. Food & Meals
    • Meals at tea houses include Nepali staples like dal-bhat, noodles, soups, and momos.
    • Prices are higher at remote locations, so carrying energy bars or snacks is recommended.

    Drinking Water Facility

We suggest you drink 3-4 liters per day while you are at a high altitude. Some locals drink water directly from the tap, but we don’t recommend that trekkers drink water directly. You can purify tap water by using purification tablets or LifeStraws. You can purchase bottled water or boiled water from a tea house along the trekking route.

    ATM facility in Trekking Routes

Most trekking packages in Nepal cover permits, accommodation, meals, and guide/porter services, but it’s important to carry some extra cash for personal expenses along the way.

Along the trail, almost everything runs on cash only. There are no ATMs in remote trekking areas like the Manaslu region.

Extra money is useful for things like hot showers, charging devices, snacks, bottled drinks, Wi-Fi in teahouses, tips for guides and porters, and small personal treats. It’s always better to carry enough Nepali rupees in small denominations before starting the trek, as banking facilities are not available once you leave the city.

    Guide and Porters

Hiring a licensed guide is mandatory for the Manaslu region, as it is a restricted trekking area. A guide helps with navigation, permits, safety, and also adds valuable cultural insight into the villages and traditions along the route.

Porters are optional but highly recommended if you want a more comfortable trek. They carry your main luggage, allowing you to walk with just a light daypack. This makes long days on the trail much easier, especially at higher altitudes.

It’s important to treat guides and porters fairly, respect their work, and ensure they have proper gear, insurance, and fair wages. Tipping at the end of the trek is also a common and appreciated practice.

    Weight limits for Porter

Porters carry a maximum weight of about 20 kg for 2 trekkers, so we suggest that our clients pack only the necessary items. Unnecessary items can be left in the Kathmandu Hotel or Office.
