Good to Know
Your Journey, Step by Step
Permits required for Everest Base Camp Luxury Trek
To trek to Everest Base Camp, trekkers need two main permits. These permits are mandatory and checked at different checkpoints along the trekking route.
- Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
This permit is required to enter Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Everest region. The permit helps support conservation and trail maintenance in the national park. It can be obtained in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board office or at Monjo on the trekking route.
- Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit
This local permit is required for entering the Khumbu region. The fee supports local infrastructure, community projects, and trekking route management. It is usually issued in Lukla or Monjo before entering the upper Everest region.
Is a TIMS Card Required?
The TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card is generally no longer required for the Everest Base Camp Trek, as the Khumbu local permit has replaced it in the Everest region. However, some older trekking information may still mention it.
Documents Needed
- Valid passport
- Passport-size photos
- Nepal visa copy (if applicable)
- Permit fees in Nepali Rupees
Everest Base Camp Luxury Lodge Trek Difficulty
The Everest Base Camp Luxury Lodge Trek is considered a moderately challenging high-altitude trek. While the trek includes comfortable accommodation and better services than standard teahouse treks, the walking distance, changing terrain, and increasing elevation still make it physically demanding.
Trekkers usually walk for 5-7 hours per day on rocky mountain trails, stone staircases, suspension bridges, and gradual uphill sections. The biggest challenge is the high altitude rather than technical climbing. As the trek reaches Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters and Kala Patthar at 5,545 meters, proper acclimatization is essential to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
The luxury lodge experience makes the trek more comfortable by providing warm rooms, better meals, attached bathrooms in lower regions, and cozy dining areas. These added comforts help trekkers recover better after long trekking days, making the journey easier compared to basic teahouse trekking.
Lukla Flight Information
Flights to Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Lukla, are the most common and fastest way to start the Everest Base Camp Luxury Lodge Trek. The flight operates from Kathmandu (or sometimes Ramechhap during peak seasons) and takes around 25–35 minutes, offering dramatic views of the Himalayan landscape, rivers, and deep valleys. It is considered one of the most scenic short flights in the world.
However, Lukla flights are highly weather-dependent due to the airport’s location in a mountainous region. Delays and cancellations are common, especially during the monsoon (June–August) and winter months, and even in peak seasons if visibility is poor. For this reason, trekkers are advised to keep at least 1–2 buffer days in their itinerary to avoid missing international connections.
During busy trekking seasons, flights may also be operated from Ramechhap Airport instead of Kathmandu to reduce air traffic congestion. In such cases, travelers must take a 4–6 hour drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap before catching the flight. Despite these challenges, the Lukla flight remains the standard and most convenient gateway to the Everest region.
Accommodation during EBC Luxury Lodge trek
Your accommodation during the Everest Base Camp Luxury Lodge Trek is carefully selected to provide maximum comfort throughout the journey. In Kathmandu, you will stay in a premium 5-star hotel with modern amenities, comfortable rooms, excellent hospitality, and easy access to major attractions and restaurants.
If you have a preferred 5-star hotel in Kathmandu, please let us know, and we will do our best to arrange it according to availability.
During the trek, accommodation is provided in the best available luxury lodges along the Everest trail. These lodges offer comfortable rooms, warm hospitality, cozy dining areas, and better facilities compared to standard trekking lodges. In selected locations, attached bathrooms, hot showers, electric blankets, and heated dining spaces will also be available.
Accommodation is arranged on a twin-sharing basis, where two travelers are provided with one double or twin room. For groups with an odd number of participants, triple-sharing rooms will be arranged accordingly. Single rooms can also be organized upon request with an additional supplement, subject to availability.
Meals during Everest Base Camp Trek
The Everest Base Camp Luxury Lodge Trek offers a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience throughout the journey. In Kathmandu, you will enjoy breakfast at your 5-star hotel with a wide selection of continental, Asian, and local dishes.
During the trek, meals are served at carefully selected luxury lodges and premium mountain teahouses. Compared to standard trekking routes, luxury lodges provide a greater variety of freshly prepared meals, especially for breakfast and dinner. You can enjoy options such as freshly baked bread, eggs, pancakes, porridge, soups, pasta, rice dishes, noodles, potatoes, vegetables, meat items, desserts, tea, coffee, and seasonal fruits in many places.
In luxury lodges, food is often prepared by experienced and professionally trained chefs who focus on both quality and taste, providing a more refined dining experience even in the remote Himalayan region.
Lunch is generally served at the best available lodges along the trekking trail during the daytime hike. Meals are prepared with hygiene and nutrition in mind to keep trekkers energized throughout the journey. Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary requirements can also be arranged with prior notice.
Internet & Connectivity, and ATM Availability
Internet and mobile connectivity on the Everest Base Camp Luxury Lodge Trek are available but inconsistent. In lower villages like Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, luxury lodges usually provide Wi-Fi through local networks, and mobile SIM cards (Ncell and NTC) may also work in many areas.
However, the connection is often slow, shared by many users, and becomes weaker as you climb higher toward Dingboche, Lobuche, and Everest Base Camp. At higher altitudes, connectivity is mostly limited to basic messages, and sometimes completely unavailable.
ATM facilities are very limited on the trekking route. The main and most reliable ATM is in Namche Bazaar, where trekkers can withdraw cash before continuing higher into the mountains.
Beyond Namche, there are no dependable ATMs, so it is strongly recommended to carry enough Nepali cash for the entire trek. Cards are not accepted in most lodges, and all payments for food, Wi-Fi, hot showers, and other services are made in cash.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is an essential requirement for the Everest Base Camp Luxury Lodge Trek because the journey takes place in a remote, high-altitude region where medical facilities are very limited. A good insurance policy should specifically cover high-altitude trekking (usually above 5,000 meters) and emergencies such as altitude sickness or serious injury during the trek.
One of the most important features to include is emergency helicopter evacuation, as the only quick way to reach proper medical care from areas near Everest Base Camp is by air. Helicopter rescue from high-altitude villages like Gorakshep or Dingboche can be extremely expensive without insurance coverage. Medical treatment, hospital transfer, and emergency repatriation should also be included in the policy.
Travel insurance should ideally cover trip delays or cancellations, especially due to unpredictable Lukla flights and weather conditions in the Everest region. Since trekking in the Himalayas involves changing weather, rough terrain, and altitude challenges, having strong insurance gives trekkers financial protection and peace of mind throughout the journey.
Cultural Etiquette
During the Everest Base Camp Luxury Lodge Trek, you’ll pass through traditional Sherpa villages where Buddhist culture is an important part of daily life. A simple “Namaste” greeting is appreciated and shows respect to locals.
When visiting monasteries or religious sites like Tengboche Monastery, walk clockwise around sacred structures, keep noise low, and always ask before taking photos of people or monks.
Dress modestly by covering shoulders and knees, and avoid touching prayer flags or religious objects. Being polite, calm, and respectful helps you connect better with local culture and makes the journey more meaningful.
