Have you ever asked yourself what it is like to trek in one of the remotest regions of the Himalayas in Nepal? Well, the Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek is among the most remote, challenging, and adventurous trekking routes in Nepal, connecting Dhorpatan, the picturesque area of western Nepal, with the isolated valleys of Upper Dolpo, and continuing toward Jomsom. The thing that makes the Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom trek truly special is the opportunity to experience untouched Himalayan wilderness and traditional mountain culture far from Nepal’s busy trekking routes.

The adventure begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara and a drive to Beni, followed by a gradual trek through villages, forests, alpine meadows, and high mountain terrain. One of the early highlights is Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, Nepal’s only designated hunting reserve, where you can experience pristine wilderness and diverse wildlife.

As the trek continues toward Dolpo, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and remote. You cross high passes and follow the Tarap Chu River toward Dho Tarap(4,080m/13,382ft), one of Dolpo’s most culturally significant settlements. The trek then reaches its most challenging section as you cross the Numa La Pass(5,310m/17,421ft) and Baga La Pass (5,179m/16,988ft). These high Himalayan passes offer dramatic views of snow-covered peaks, barren valleys, alpine landscapes, and the remote wilderness of Dolpo.

After crossing the passes, the trail descends toward Phoksundo Lake (3,611m/11,847ft), one of Nepal’s most beautiful mountain lakes. Its striking turquoise-blue waters, dramatic cliffs, surrounding mountains, and nearby Ringmo Village make it one of the unforgettable highlights of the journey. Then, the trek continues deeper into the remote Upper Dolpo region. The route crosses the challenging Kang La Pass(5,360m/17,585ft) and leads toward Shey Gompa, one of the most culturally and spiritually significant sites in Upper Dolpo.

From Shey Gompa, the journey continues crossing several villages and high-altitude terrain toward Sangda La Pass (5,460m/17,913ft), before descending toward the Jomsom region and the Kali Gandaki Valley. Along the way, trekkers experience spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, isolated settlements, and landscapes that remain largely untouched by modern development.

From Jomsom, you can drive to Pokhara, enjoying the changing scenery from the high Himalayas to the lower valleys and back to Kathmandu. You will spend up to several weeks on the trek, making the Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek an ideal choice for physically fit and experienced trekkers seeking solitude, authentic culture, challenging adventure, and an off-the-beaten-path Himalayan experience.

Dhorpatan

Dhorpatan is a small mountain settlement in Baglung District of western Nepal, located at around 3,900 meters/12,795ft above sea level. It is the headquarters of Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, Nepal’s only hunting reserve, established in 1987. Covering about 1,325 square kilometers across Baglung, Myagdi, and East Rukum, the reserve is home to diverse Himalayan wildlife, including blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, goral, serow, musk deer, black bear, red panda, and snow leopard.

Dhorpatan is also known for its rich birdlife. Species recorded in the reserve include pheasants and partridges, as well as the Himalayan monal (Danphe), cheer pheasant, and other high-altitude birds. Historical biodiversity inventories recorded 137 bird species, 18 mammal species, 2 herpetofaunal species, 58 vascular plant species, and 36 endemic flowering plant species.

Dolpo

Dolpo is a remote Himalayan region in Dolpa District of Karnali Province, northwestern Nepal, often described as ‘the district behind the Himalayas’ because of its isolated location and rugged terrain. The region is broadly divided into Upper Dolpo and Lower Dolpo and is known for high-altitude landscapes and distinctive Tibetan-influenced culture and traditions. Here, human settlements are very small due to the remoteness and the vastness of the region.

Besides that, almost 90% of this region lies above 3,000 meters. Its remoteness has helped preserve traditional lifestyles, ancient Buddhist and Bon practices, and pristine Himalayan landscapes. With its dramatic mountains, alpine valleys, high passes, and remote villages, Dolpo remains one of Nepal’s most culturally and naturally fascinating wilderness regions.

    Good to Know

    Your Journey, Step by Step

Best time for Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek

The best time for the Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek is late September to October and late April to May.

    Autumn(Late September to October)

The skies will be clear after the rains, the air crisp, trails usually dry, and visibility over the mountains and high Himalayan landscape will be very good. It will be especially significant in regard to the high passes in the Dolpo-Jomsom section, which include the Sangda Pass, because it is better to have stable weather conditions without much snowfall. October is generally the most reliable month.

    Spring (April to May)

Spring is one of the best seasons for this trek. The weather gradually becomes warmer, the skies are generally clear, and the high passes become more accessible as winter snow melts. Dhorpatan is particularly attractive in spring, with greener landscapes and blooming flowers, while Upper Dolpo offers pleasant trekking conditions and fewer trekkers.

However, early April can still have snow on higher passes, so late April to May is generally more reliable.

Summer / Monsoon (June to August)

This trek has some unique advantages when it comes to monsoon because Upper Dolpo lies in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri range and receives considerably less rainfall than much of Nepal. Once you reach the inner Dolpo region, conditions can remain relatively dry and suitable for trekking.

However, the Dhorpatan area and lower sections can be wet and muddy. For this particular Dhorpatan to Jomsom route, monsoon is therefore possible but less reliable than spring or autumn.

    Winter (November to March)

Winter is not recommended for the full Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek. Heavy snowfall and extreme cold can make the high passes difficult or impossible to cross, while temperatures at high elevations can become severely cold.

Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek Difficulty

The Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek is considered a strenuous to very difficult high-altitude trek that will suit only experienced trekkers who have a high level of fitness. It does not mean that there is only one difficult part of the trek but rather an overall experience of the trek due to long days of trekking, difficult and isolated trails, high passes above 5,000 m, considerable gain in altitude, and camping facilities. Treks from Dhorpatan to Dolpo and finally to Jomsom include difficult uphill and downhill trekking on rocky and rough trails.

Accommodation during the Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek

Accommodation on the Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek is primarily camping, especially through the remote Upper Dolpo and high-mountain sections. Unlike popular trekking regions such as Everest and Annapurna, this route has very limited lodge infrastructure, so trekkers should be prepared for basic and remote accommodation.

Camping: Most nights are spent in tents prepared by the trekking crew. The crew carries the necessary camping equipment, food and cooking supplies, allowing you to stay in remote valleys and high-altitude areas where no permanent accommodation is available.

Teahouses and Lodges: Basic teahouses or local lodges may be available in some villages and lower sections of the route, but facilities are much simpler than those found on popular Nepal trekking routes. Rooms generally have basic beds and shared bathroom facilities, and availability can be seasonal.

As you reach Jomsom, accommodation becomes more comfortable, with established lodges and hotels with better facilities such as private or attached bathrooms and hot showers.

Meals on the Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom trek

The meals during the Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek are mostly prepared by the trekking team members, particularly in the Upper Dolpo regions where there are very few teahouses. The breakfast menu includes items like porridge, eggs, bread, pancakes, toast, potatoes, tea, and coffee. The lunch and dinner items include healthy trek meals like dal bhat, rice, pasta, potatoes, vegetables, soup, chapati, and eggs. The kitchen team carries and prepares essential food supplies at the camping sites, ensuring you have regular meals even in remote areas.

Since this is a remote and high-altitude trek, the food menu is simpler than on popular teahouse routes, but meals are planned to provide sufficient energy for long trekking days. Hot tea, coffee and drinking water are also available, while vegetarian meals can be arranged easily.

Transportation for Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek

Transportation for this trek combines domestic flights and scenic overland journeys to make the long-distance travel more convenient. You will begin with a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, which takes around 25-30 minutes.

From Pokhara, you will continue by sharing a jeep to Beni, the gateway toward Dhorpatan. The road section also provides an opportunity to experience the changing landscapes of western Nepal.

After completing the trek, you will reach Jomsom, from where you will travel by road to Pokhara by sharing a jeep. Then, from Pokhara, you will return to Kathmandu by a tourist bus, allowing you to enjoy the scenic journey along the Prithvi Highway.

    Required Permits for this trek

For the Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom Trek, several permits are required because the route passes through Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, the restricted Upper Dolpo area, Shey Phoksundo National Park, and the Annapurna region near Jomsom.

    The main permits are:

    • Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Trekking Permit
    • Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit
    • Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve Entry Permit
    • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
    • TIMS Card

Bold Himalaya arranged all the required permits so that you don’t have to worry.

    Nepal Visa Process

Most foreign travelers can obtain a Nepal Tourist Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, which makes the visa process simple and convenient.

Before arriving, travelers can complete the online tourist visa form through the official Nepal Immigration portal or use the self-service kiosks at the airport.

The current tourist visa fees are:

    • USD 30 for 15 days
    • USD 50 for 30 days
    • USD 125 for 90 days

Tourist visas are generally multiple-entry, and the stay is counted from the date of entry into Nepal. Travelers should have a passport valid for at least six months.

Some nationalities are not eligible for Visa on Arrival and must obtain a visa in advance from a Nepalese diplomatic mission, so travelers should check the latest requirements before departure.

    Facilities during the Trek

Electricity and Charging: Electricity is very limited in the remote Dhorpatan Upper Dolpo Jomsom route and is mainly available through small solar systems in some villages and camps.

Basic electricity is available in Dhorpatan and some lower settlements, but it disappears as you move into the more remote trekking areas.

Charging may be available for a fee, but it can be unreliable, so carrying a power bank and spare batteries is highly recommended.

ATM: There are no reliable ATMs along the remote trekking route, so withdraw enough Nepalese Rupees in Kathmandu or Pokhara before starting the trek.

Internet and Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity are very limited in Upper Dolpo and may be completely unavailable for several days. Some lower villages may have occasional mobile signal or basic internet with an additional fee, but trekkers should be prepared to remain offline during much of the trek.

Drinking Water: Natural streams and springs are available along the route, but water should not be consumed directly. You should drink boiled or filtered water. Carrying a reusable bottle with purification tablets or a personal filter is recommended.

    Guide and Porters

You will be accompanied by an experienced, licensed trekking guide throughout the trek. Your guide will lead the group, manage the trekking logistics, assist with navigation and permits, and provide support in high-altitude and remote areas.

For our group arrangement, 1 guide is provided for every 5 trekkers. If the group has more than 5 trekkers, an additional guide will be arranged to ensure proper support and safety. Porters are provided at a ratio of 1 porter for every 2 trekkers, carrying your main trekking baggage and essential equipment, with each porter carrying a maximum of 15-20 kg of combined luggage.

If the group size increases, additional porters will be arranged accordingly to maintain a comfortable and manageable load for each porter.
