Enjoy Gokyo Lakes Renjo La Pass Trek with Bold Himalaya

Gokyo Lakes Renjo La Pass Trek is an ideal trek on the stunning scenery of the Everest region with the thrill of climbing up the Gokyo Valley and crossing the strenuous Renjo La Pass. The trek is ideal for adventure seekers and fitness-conscious trekkers who need an off-beaten-track trek of the Everest trekking path.

Situated above Namche Bazaar, is Renjo La Pass, one of the highest and most stunning of Everest’s passes offering panormaic views of Himalayas around you. The hike culminates at peaceful Gokyo Lakes, five glacial blue lakes in the midst of the Himalayas. You’ll be close to some of the world’s highest mountains – including Everest itself, at an enormous 8,848.86 meters high. The vista includes other titans like Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and breathtaking Ama Dablam. You’ll also gaze down at Nepal’s biggest glacier, Ngozumpa, flowing out underneath the summits.

The trip starts off with a true ride of your life flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and then more so as you trek through the scenic Sherpa villages, rhododendron forests, and suspension bridges above Dudh Koshi River. You also get to trek through the famous Namche Bazaar, the busy Sherpa town and Everest gateway. There is ample time in the schedule for proper acclimatization, with a trip to Everest View Hotel for dramatic sunrise views of Everest and neighboring peaks.

From here, the climb is along a scenic route through Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo Valley to ascend Gokyo Ri (5,357m) – one of the best viewpoints in the region. Panorama view of 360-degree panorama of the massif Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and several hundred other Himalayas at the summit awaits. The trip will then pass on to see lovely Gokyo Lakes followed by Renjo La Pass (5,435m) offering scenery beyond belief, and comes back down to Lungden to eventually return back to Namche Bazaar and finally Lukla.

Not only this is an incredible trek, with breathtaking mountain scenery, it’s also an adventure that engages one in rich Sherpa culture and ancient Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and remote Himalayan villages. You will have occasional glimpses of traditional mani walls, prayer flags, and ancient stupas that give a look at the religious culture here. This will add a splash of warmth, through welcoming hospitality, on the glory of this fabulous adventure.

Gokyo Lakes Renjo La Pass Trek is a difficult but worth the effort trip for those adventurers who are seeking to see less touristic but equally stunning Everest region landscapes. The trek is highly recommended for the lover of stunning alpine lakes, stunning glaciers, or of adventure in passing over a high Himalayan pass.

Highlights of the Gokyo Lakes Renjo La Pass Trek

  • The stunning blue Gokyo Lakes – seriously, pictures don’t do them justice!
  • Climbing up Gokyo Ri (5,357m) where you can see mountains in every direction
  • Getting amazing views of Everest and other massive peaks (Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu)
  • Flight to Lukla – one of the world’s most adventurous flight!
  • Hiking through Sagarmatha National Park (it’s UNESCO listed) with all its plants and animals
  • Meeting local Sherpa people and seeing how they live in these mountains
  • Stopping at old Buddhist monasteries that have been there forever
  • Making it over Renjo La Pass (5,435m) – one of the three high passes in the Everest area
  • Walking next to Nepal’s biggest glacier (Ngozumpa)
  • Exploring beautiful sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo and Thame

Why Choose the Gokyo Lakes Renjo La Pass Trek?

  • Easiest of the Three High Pass Treks: Renjo La is the lowest altitude pass at 5,435m in the Everest region. It’s the ideal high-altitude experience if you want adventure with a slightly easier challenge.
  • More Himalayan Panoramas than Other Everest Treks: You’ll witness four of World’s highest mountains (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu) and hundreds of other snow-covered peaks rising above you.
  • A Secret Gem (Less Crowds, More Tranquility): Avoid the crowded Everest Base Camp path and experience some tranquility on this less popular route.
  • Hike the Gokyo Valley (Glaciers & Lakes’ Land): The turquoise Gokyo Lakes and huge Ngozumpa Glacier (Nepal’s biggest) are what make this hike unique.
  • More Sherpa Cultural Immersion: Explore genuine Sherpa settlements such as Thame and Machhermo not swarmed by tourists, where you can observe sherpa people living in reality.
  • Stay in Cozy Mountain Teahouses with Friendly Hospitality: Family-run teahouses offer a more personal, warmer experience than the big trekkers’ lodges.
  • A Sense of Real Adventure with Manageable Difficulty: Hard enough to be proud but easier than the other high passes – perfect for beginner high-altitude trekkers.
  • A Photographer’s Dream: Those lake reflections with mountain backdrops will make even amateur photographers look professional.
  • A Less Traveled but More Rewarding Journey: If you want a trek that’s different from what everyone else does, with better views, fewer people, and more interesting stuff to see – this is it!

Detailed Itinerary

Your Journey, Step by Step

+ Expand All
Day 1

Arriving in the capital, Kathmandu (1,350m)

You arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. A Bold Himalaya representative will receive you there. They will bring you to your hotel. You can either relax, or go out and experience Thamel life – it’s this great slice of city with trendy cafes, climbing gear stores, and lots of local flavour. In the late evening, you’ll be met by your trekking guide at Bold Himalaya’s office. They will guide you through all that you will be doing on the Trek, arrange all of your permits, and assist with answering any questions you might have. You will overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 2

Fly to Lukla (2,850m) & trek to Phakding (2,610m) | 30-min flight & 2-3 hour walk

We will depart early morning and fly to the airport on a flight that will be an excellent 30-minute journey to Lukla – it’s really your gateway to Everest. Depending on where you sit on the plane, you could see the entire Himalayan range stretching out in front of you – if you want the best views, try to snag a seat on the left side of the plane! Just in case you don’t know, Lukla airport has the world’s shortest runway, so hold on to your seat for a little rollercoaster landing experience! Once we land, we’ll meet up with our trekking team and head out to Phakding on our trek.

The path takes us through some beautiful Sherpa villages like Cheplung and Ghat. You’ll see these incredible old prayer wheels, mani walls (they’re these Buddhist-inscribed rocks), and stupas. We’ll also walk over some pretty exciting suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River and walk through rhododendron and pine forest. Keep your camera handy – you’ll get to take some great shots of Kusum Kanguru and Mount Khumbila (the Sherpas consider this one a holy mountain). It’s not so hard a walk to Phakding, where you’ll sleep in a riverside lodge in Phakding.

Day 3

Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) - (5-6 hours)

We’ll eat breakfast before we start on the trail along the Dudh Koshi River. The path goes through pine forests, and we’ll cross many suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Bridge – the longest in the Everest region. We’ll go through pretty Sherpa villages like Benkar and Monjo. At Monjo, we’ll enter Sagarmatha National Park where they’ll check our permits.

The path gets really steep from there as we make our way up to Namche. The highlight? It is here that we’ll catch our very first glimpse of Everest, pouring out behind the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge! The climb up to Namche is rather tough, but believe me, it’s all the hassle worth! The town itself is wonderful – it’s in this natural basin between the mountains. There are heaps of cafes, bakeries and shops to meander around. We will overnight at a lodge in Namche Bazaar.

Day 4

Rest Day at Namche Bazaar

Today, we’ll have a rest day to acclimatize at high altitude. We’ll do a beautiful walk up to the Everest View Hotel – perfect for some great views of spectacular views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse. On the way, we’ll walk through the villages of Khumjung and Kunde, where you’ll be able to see something rather special – a monastery said to have a Yeti scalp inside! We will also go to Khunde Hospital, built by the famous Edmund Hillary. You may walk around town in Namche, or visit Sherpa Culture Museum, or take it easy at a cafe. We will stay at Namche Bazaar.

Day 5

Namche Bazaar to Dole (4,038m) trek

It’s our first day today when we start trekking from Namche climbing to a ridge from which you get most beautiful vistas of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. We’re taking the other way rather than following the conventional route towards Everest Base Camp. Instead of it, we’re trekking through a side trail towards Gokyo. When we approach Mong La Pass, we drop down towards Phortse Tenga – a peaceful location beside Dudh Koshi River. Next, we’ll trek through beautiful rhododendron and birch forests until Dole. Here you’ll have excellent views of Khumbila and Tawache summits. We will have a cozy teahouse tonight at Dole.

Day 6

Trek from Dole to Machhermo (4,470m)

Today we will proceed along steadily ascending through beautiful meadows where yaks graze. The trees disappear as we climb higher and the landscape opens up. You’ll get wonderful views of Cho Oyu – the sixth-highest mountain on earth! We’ll walk through small summer settlements and then reach Machhermo, a village with fantastic mountain views. Fun fact: this village is famous for a real Yeti sighting! We’ll spend the night in a lodge in Machhermo.

Day 7

Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo (4,750m)

Today we’ll climb gradually to the first of the Gokyo Lakes, Longpongo. The beautiful blue lakes are very sacred to the Sherpa folk around here. Above the second, Taboche Tsho, you’ll reach the largest – Dudh Pokhari. Gokyo village is situated beside that, and here we’ll establish our overnight camp. Just wait till you get Cho Oyu’s reflection in the lake – it’s absolutely amazing! We’ll spend the night in Gokyo.

Day 8

Gokyo Ri climb (5,357m) and lakes exploration

We’ll make an early start to climb Gokyo Ri – trust me, the views are worth getting up for! From the top, you can see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and hundreds of other peaks. Sunrise here is one you’ll never forget. After we come back down, you can go to the other Gokyo Lakes or just relax in the village. Another night in Gokyo.

Day 9

Trek from Gokyo Valley to Lungden via Renjo La Pass (5,435m)

This is the most busiest day but more than worth it! We climb to Renjo La Pass for stunning views of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and the Gokyo Lakes. The descent is steep and brings us through some very remote areas before reaching Lungden, a tiny village on an old trade route between Nepal and Tibet. Overnight in Lungden.

Day 10

Trek from Lungden to Thame

After breakfast in Lungden, we’ll hike to Thame. Today’s mostly downhill – your legs will thank you! Thame is a quaint Sherpa village with a nice monastery on a ridge. It’s one of the oldest in the Khumbu area and very serene. You can learn about Buddhist rituals here and about local Sherpa life. We’ll spend the night in Thame.

Day 11

Trek from Thame to Namche Bazaar

We walk downhill from Thame, cross a bridge, and reach Samdo – the views here are breathtaking! We then go down to Thamo village and to the Khari Gompa monastery. We cross a check post, and then you’ll find something of interest – the world’s highest hydroelectric power station! Then we return to Namche, which is now more vibrant and filled with trekkers. Another night in Namche.

Day 12

Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla

Our last day of trekking is along the Dudh Koshi River. We’ll cross several suspension bridges and go through forest and villages to Lukla. You’ll see lots of prayer flags, Chortens, Mani walls, and small Gompas in the villages. Celebration time – you’ve made it! Overnight in Lukla.

Day 13

Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu

We return to Kathmandu early morning by flight. The day is then free on return to the city. Feel like Shopping? Take the shopping-lined streets of Thamel. Want Culture? Head for the lovely durbar squares and temples. Or just relax – you deserve it! On the last night, there is a special farewell dinner to mark our incredible trek. You overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 14

Departure or Optional Tour

After breakfast, we drop you to the airport where you return back home by air. Also, we can arrange alternative tours if you want to stay back for a few more days. We can allow you to have Kathmandu’s culture tour, jungle stay for Chitwan, or just relax in Pokhara. Your tour can be further improvised.

Good to Know

Things to Remember

1. Expandable Trekking Routes from Gokyo Lakes Renjo La Pass

The great thing about this trek is you can easily make it longer if you’re having an awesome time:

  • Add on Everest Base Camp via Cho La Pass: After seeing the Gokyo Lakes, keep going to EBC by crossing Cho La Pass (5,420m). It’s a bit challenging but so worth it!
  • Go for the Three Passes Trek: You can also do all three passes: Renjo La, Cho La (5,420m) and Kongma La (5,535m). It’s the ultimate Everest region experience.
  • Check out Nangpa La Valley: For something truly special, hike to this hidden valley near the Tibet border. Most tourists never see it!
  • Alternative Return via Phortse: Want to see something different on the way back? Take the path through Phortse village instead – it’s a peaceful Sherpa community with amazing mountain views that most trekkers miss.
2. Gokyo Lakes Renjo La Pass Trekking Cost

The price fluctuates according to a few factors – the way you’d like to approach the trek, where you stay, the number of days that you trek, if you go in group or do solo, need of porters, and what kind of hotels you will be staying in Kathmandu and along the way. Plus, you have got flights to and from Lukla, permits, food, and guide and porter fees to think about.

Overall, the whole experience will cost between $1100 to $1800 per person- all of which you will need!

3. Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek Distance

We’ll trek approximately 120 kilometers in 14 days – it sounds a lot, I know, but don’t worry! We’ve planned it exactly right with rest days so that you can just unwind and take in those head-spinning views. And meet the very friendly Sherpa people in between!

4. Best Time for Gokyo Lakes Renjo La Pass Trek

We’ve got two perfect seasons for you:

  • Spring (March-May): Think warm sunny days (11°C-18°C), beautiful red rhododendrons everywhere, and amazing mountain views!
  • Autumn (September-November): A bit cooler (7°C-14°C) but oh my goodness, the views! You can see Everest and other giant peaks so clearly it feels like you could touch them!
  • Winter (December-February): Still doable if you’re up for an extra challenge and don’t mind the cold!
5. Renjo La Pass Trek Difficulty

Let’s get to the point here – it’s a fine challenge, but one that you’re capable of. You will start at Lukla (2,860m) and ascend to Renjo La Pass (5,435m). We will trek about 6-7 hours every day for the most part. If you’re already capable of long walks in your home surroundings without even getting winded, then you’re set. Simply exercise a bit in advance and you’ll do perfectly!
